I am a rank newbie to the affiliate game and I have a big decision to make. I recently bought SBI and love it. After a month of working the keyword research tool to death looking for a good site concept, I stumbled on, what I believe to be, a goldmine of potential keywords for my theme based content site.
What I found is about 90 related keywords that all have strong demand yet extremely weak supply. I have found my theme. They are all associated with a main general keyword that I will call ?widget?. The 90 associated keywords all take the form of ?typeA widget?, ?typeB widget?, ?typeC widget? etc. The lone keyword ?widget? is very general and has a high demand along with the expected huge supply of sites catering to it. I am not optimistic about my chances of ranking high with the SE using ?widget?.
So, as I see it, I have two choices.
1. Don?t use ?widget? but rather concentrate on the 90 variations. Pick the best one and make my theme-based content site from it. When I get it up to a profitable level, start another site using the next one. Keep doing this up as long as I have the time to continue making new sites. The advantage of this would be that each site could be SE optimized for maximum traffic. The downside is that I would have all the work of maintaining a multitude of sites. I would not have the time to get any of them up to their full potential. And I would never be able to actually use all 90 of these great keywords (not in my lifetime anyway).
2. Create only one theme-based content site using the keyword ?widget?. Then use the 90 keyword variations as my tier 2 keyword based site pages. The advantage of this would be that I could devote all my energies to one single site hopefully taking it to its full profit potential. I would probably be able to (eventually) use all 90 keyword variations because I would be going into each one in less detail. The down side would be that my main page (targeted to ?widget?) would get little SE traffic because of the extreme competition. I would have to depend on the SEs drilling down to my tier 2 pages and giving them each a high rank for their respective "typeX widget" keyword. Thus drawing traffic to them directly by people searching for ?typeX widget? etc. I am not sure if the SEs work like that. I am also afraid that the pages would dilute their SE desirability by being tied together on one main site rather than individual sites.
So, do I anchor them all together around the main weak keyword or use them as stand alone sites? While I search my affiliate info library for a clue, I am hoping that the pros that prowl this forum and so generously give of their time and advice will be inclined to comment. Thanks all.
SE's do drill down, so don' t worry about lower level pages not being indexed.
I had the same problem in a way Peter. Debt is super competitive, but that's my domain. I differentiated by setting the focus of my site to giving people facts about the different forms of debt relief.
I have at least 5 to 10 pages on the 5 major debt relief choices with the exception of bankruptcy I think, and that's one area I will be working on to add more content. Ideally I want each major section to have around 20 pages.
Don't give up on getting top rankings for your home page, but your visitors, particularly from search engines, will come into your site in as many different ways as the number of pages you have on your site. That's why it's important that all pages be optimized and submitted (which SBI does so well).
Your home page will get extra traffic boosts from:
1. Links from SE's and Directories that only allow the home page listed;
2. Reciprocal links (most have a tendency to link home pages only, not subpages)
3. All your other pages linking to the home page with anchor text links.
"I am also afraid that the pages would dilute their SE desirability by being tied together on one main site rather than individual sites"
Actually, the opposite happens, it tightly themes your entire site about widgets and increases the liklihood your home page will rank better for widgets, as well as subpages ranking well for their individual terms of X widget, A widget, Green Widgets, whatever widgets.
Keeping this in mind, I would go with option 2 and get all the value I could from the keyphrases, and the content you will be able to build with them.
My 2 cents,

Hi Peter,
As debs said, go with option 2. The Ses do index them and rank them if appropriate. My site get more traffic from sub pages than the main page. The main page has a pr of 1. It is almost a new site. But i do have traffic to other pages. So you see that your main page does not have to rank well to get traffic to other pages.
If your internal linking is good, your main page will start ranking due to these sub pages. So go ahead with option 2. Like you said you can concentrate on a single site to get it to full potential.
I'd follow the same mindset as the other post. #2 You could always reverse your path and create a minisite if the site size grows too much.
I shoot for about 100-200 pages and then look for ways to split or start another site.
One page a day and I'll have 90 pages in 3 months.
