Yeah philb, you can say that again.

It's not easy, by no means! Funny thing, when I first
started hunting for links, the last problem I thought I
would encounter was convincing webmasters why we
should link using strategic keywords.

The FFA sites you talk about, I do agree with you 100%

Link farms, ditto. Some of the newer "directories" are
nothing but link farms. If they ask for a link back for your
listing to be included...watch out!

Phil,

I think you need to re-learn SEO.

MAJOR SE's no longer give hardly any weight to (some don't even look at) meta tags. I put them in but they're hardly an SEO strategy.

Buy Sean Burn's Rankings Revealed. It's only $69 USD. Sean is a pro SEO'er and in his manual he states many times that meta tags are more or less dead.

Many other "pros" say the same.

You're entitled to your opinion, but lots of newbies visit this forum and it really won't help them by telling them that meta tags are the way to go.

Perhaps you could give us some examples of sites you own that rank well in SE's using meta tags?

I think that would create even more confusion to the newbie SEO. Having a site which ranks well using meta tags, based on this, you cant make the assumption it was the meta tags that helped out. By all means include them in your code, but dont live by them Very Happy

Hi all
Meta tags do rank sites but engines at the moment rank just as much on the link content. As most of you know search engines do change the way in which they rank and at the moment links are in.
http:// www.cornwall-search.co.uk gets about a million hits a month.
This is due to the links and yes the meta tags. Can I ask what will happen to all the sites that have no meta tags when the engines change the way they rank again! Those of you that know about meta tags will update your site ,wait about six weeks to get listed again, or pay for clicks. Those who don't know or understand about tags, what will they do?
The answer is yes you have got to adapt your site to how the engines rank.
But learning the basics will not hurt and will be of use at some point.
We can all agree or disagree but the truth is,if it works for you don't change it.The problem is if you don't know or understand about the basics
and engines change(wich they will) what do you do then?

The reason the SEs have placed little/zero relevance on meta tags is because it was very easy to manipulate. The SEs will be moving forward with search, not backwards.

Go ahead and put terms in the meta tags that aren't on the content of the actual page, I bet you'll never rank for those terms. That site probably gets traffic because of inbound links and it's onpage content and title tag, not the other meta tags. If you're ranking for terms that are in your meta tags, it's only because those terms are also on your page elsewhere.

I'm not sure if you've been living under a rock lately, but the search engines don't use the keyword and description meta tags for ranking purposes, for the most part. The only thing that is significant in the HEAD section of the page is the TITLE tag. Besides that, you're only fooling yourself.
