Recently I reorganized my site by putting pages in new folders. Now I wait for these moved pages to be indexed and visitors get message "page cannot be found." Is there anything I could have done to make a smooth transition?

Use some 302 redirects. This tells the SE's that pages have permanently moved.

There are some examples if you search the forums.

Create a custom 404 page which you can upload to your webserver, so when visitors land on your site from the search engines using one of your old URLs, you can direct them to your new URLs.

It's a good idea to have some sort of 404 page on any site, but if you set up the 301s (don't you just love numbers?) in your .htaccess file, you won't miss any of the old traffic in this case.

Cheers,
Charlie.
