Greetings! Wonderful site, Allan. Great forum discussions, everyone.
I currently live near Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in the U.S.
I discovered affiliate marketing in '96 or '97 with Amazon. I created a Web site called "The North Carolina Bookstore" and tried to list as many books in different categories as possible (genealogy, travel, history, Wright Brothers, Andy Griffith, etc.), but all with a North Carolina connection. That was back when making a link to an individual item on Amazon was much harder than now. It was fun, and I made a little money, but way too little for all the work I was doing on it. Eventually I stopped working on it and after awhile let the site and the domain expire.
I got interested in affiliate marketing again last year when I created a Web site for my daughter, www.sendmetoindia.com. The site was more of a fun family thing for us than a site designed to sell stuff, but I was still kinda' hoping that it might bring in some signficant money. Again, it made a tiny bit of money, but very little in comparison to the amount of work it took. Anyway, because it is not aimed at selling, I have stopped updating it in favor of working on projects that ARE aimed at selling. (I should do a little updating of it, I guess, just for my daughter's sake.)
Earlier this year I bought "Google Millions" and tried my hand at affiliate marking via Adwords. Through trial and error I've reached the point where I'm clearing $5 to $10 a day. (My wife noticed a recent Commission Junction check I got for $1,300 and became excited until I told her that to make that check I had to spend $1,100 or so with Google!) Can't seem to make it go any higher.
Now I'm back to trying to build a site aimed at selling www.tops4tennis.com -- one I can launch and then (I hope) let sit out there generating money while I move on and develop additional sites (I guess it's a Martell type site, sorta'). It's very much under construction but a few pages are there now. Probably not a smart idea to hang something so incomplete out there, but when I've purchased a domain name I have a hard time letting it sit "empty."

Hi Steve, Welcome! Sounds as though you have lots of interesting experience.
One thing you could try is doing some research before you build your next site to look into the value of the keywords - see what people re paying for them at Overture and AdWords. If you can find a niche where plenty of the keywords are worth at least 50 cents per click that will give you a flying start with AdSense. _________________ Allan Gardyne
