Post subject: Keywords and quotation marks
|
|
|
Does anyone know why many of the pages on my site perform well when the keyword is searched in quotation marks (i.e. ?***?), but these same pages are not performing well when searched without quotation marks (i.e. ***)?
Help?
Thanks,

If you're referring to a keyword phrase, using quotes looks for that exact phrase. For example, searching for "big blue ball" will return only results that have those 3 words in that EXACT order.
Searching big blue ball without quotes, will return results with those words ANYWHERE on the page. And they don't have to be beside each other at all or in any particular order _________________ Robert

Taking what robertb said a step further ... if you have results showing with the words in any order, there are many more pages ... and it includes pages where only one of those 3 words might be used as well. Very hard to compete that way ... but there is a way
Link popularity and anchor text are two extremely important elements that SE's use to determine the relevancy of a page to a particular search query ... so you need to get good quality links into your site that use the correct anchor text (the clickable part of a text link) to help the SE's learn what your page is about (relevancy).

Thanks for all the help, I just could not figure out how I was getting a position of 30 with quotes but over 200 without. I knew the quotes made it more exact for searching, but I figured without quotes for the same keyword I should be closer than 200.
I definitely need to work on the linking and anchored text.
Thanks again Robert and Debs.
