Now that I have my site content built up, I want to spend more time getting better search engine listings.

On that note, could someone tell me how I determine my site's current pagerank?

Thanks,
Bobby

The easiest way is to view your current Pagerank is to download the Google toolbar from http://toolbar.google.com/ This will display each page's Pagerank as you browse the web (just hover your mouse over the Pagerank indicator for the exact number). Don't be TOO concerned about Pagerank though. Proper keyword optimization is extremely important too.

Jack,

Can you point out to the newbies, the obvious "spywear/scumwear" attribues this "google toolbar" has, before they download it?

Thanks

Thanks,

Let me retract the "scumware" comment, as I couldn't find evidence of that, although those guys at Google are much wiser than I, so it may be there.

Do you know what spyware is? Do you honestly believe this software doesn't track your surfing habits in any way?

Just curious.

Bobby, if you're checking PageRank of companies these days, you need to take into account the fact some very weird things have been happening at Google recently.

Popular sites with lots of links can suddenly have a zero PageRank one day and then be back to normal the next. It has happened to AssociatePrograms.com. Also, I have a very old one-page micro site whose PageRank disappeared for a several weeks and then reappeared again recently, although nothing had changed in any way as far as I know.

When doing keyword research, I like to look at the top 10 sites in Google and see what PageRank they have for the keyword I'm considering, to get a quick idea of how competitive the keyword is. However, these days, you can often find a whole bunch of large important sites in the top 10 with PageRanks of zero. It doesn't make any sense.

Right now is not a good time to do PageRank research.

Allan:

When I see a page that has a "white" or zero page rank, I can almost always find a "real" pagerank using these steps ...

1. look up the backlinks using the toolbar (PageInfo>Backward Links]
2. Use the back button to return to the page

Voila! The page now has a PageRank!

Bobby: yes, PageRank is Google's proprietary measurement and I believe the only way you can see it is via the toolbar

Hi folks

At the risk of sounding like a fool, what'sthe difference between where you page appears in search reslts and page ranking, I always assumed they were one and the same.

Sory for the dopey question.

And what about Alexa's pageranking. Is that the same as Googles, or close, or a whole different beast?

No questions are dopey. The dopes are people who don't ask questions.

You need the Google Toolbar to see the PageRank of a site. If you have a PC - not a Mac - you can go to http://toolbar.google.com/ and download it free.

When you've done that, you visit a web page and place your cursor over the word "PageRank" on the toolbar. For example, if you go to the main page at http://www.AssociatePrograms.com you can see that the page has a PageRank of 6. (10 is the top rank.) It's an exponential ranking system, so 6 is a LOT better than 5 and 5 is a lot better than 4.

That 6 is a rough guide to the site's popularity. You might expect a site with a PageRank of 6 to rank higher in search engines than a site with a Page 5, but quite often sites with low PageRanks can outrank sites with high PageRank.

The fastest way to increase your PageRank is to get links to your site from sites which have a lot of links to them from sites that have a lot of links to them. For example, it's good to be in human organized directories such as Yahoo! and DMOZ.org.

Here's a more comprehensive explanation, with some useful links:

Hope that helps.

Alexa is a whole different beast.

It shows how popular sites are but it's restricted. It measures popularity by looking only at the actions of people who have downloaded the Alexa toolbar.

Unlike Google's PageRank, with Alexa, the lower the number the better. If you're number 2000, that means you're the 2,000th most popular site on the Internet. But it's not as simple as that...

Alexa is wonderful for showing the RELATIVE popularity of web sites, for example two sites in the same industry, such as CJ and Be Free. You can go to Alexa and conjure up a little graph to show you how the two sites have performed, or you could compare SiteSell and Be Free, and see the point at which SiteSell overtook Be Free. However, if you try to compare two uneven sites, one won't even be displayed on the graph. You need to compare sites that are similar in popularity.

Or you might compare two Internet marketers' sites. Marketing sites score well because marketers tend to install Alexa. Sometimes you'll find that marketers who claim to have huge traffic don't.

Alexa also provides a fast way for you to find a site's competitors, or ones that have similar content.

If you hunt around at Alexa, you can figure out how to create a graph of your site's progress. Here's AssociatePrograms.com's very erratic progress over the past 12 months (hope that link works - it's mighty long):

[NOTE: This extra-long URL was messing up the layout of this board so I've wrapped each line. If you really want to follow the link, you'll need to do a lot of cutting and pasting.]

http://www.alexa.com/site/site_stats/signup?site_url=www.associateprograms.com&range
=1y&widget=g&style=c&submitted=true&mode
=graph&range=3m&amzn_id=>http://www.alexa.com/
site/site_stats/signup?
(I haven't done it here, but you can even encode your Amazon affiliate link into a graph.)

Hope that helps.
