I have seen in some of the sites about taking donations.
I think its a good method to earn the revenues from our site. But I just wonder how we can go about it.
Is anyone using this method in their sites?
I think it is not necessary to have a public or .gov site to ask for donations. I have also seen many personally owned sites who take and accept donations.
Lets discuss it here and help each others earn more.

We have thought about asking for donations but decided against it because we did not want to look like we needed donations. What we did was to add a new feature to the classifieds where users would pledge to pay us $15 if they were happy with the performance of their ad. This is, in effect, a donation without calling it that. They are under no obligation, and it is entirely based on their perception of the performance of their classified.
I'm sure you could come up with a similar pledge from your users. Give them something of value (maybe something you already give away for free), and ask them to pay if they are satisfied/happy/make money or whatever the goal of this give away is.
Without knowing more about your site, I can't come up with any kind of specific advice. But if you can give them something in exchange for their donation, I think it will make your site more professional.

This is funny. I know of some sites that get a ton of traffic, have affiliate links all over, and yet are always pleading for donations to upgrade their server or whatever.

I love it! I could ask all the people who post MLM stuff on this forum to send me $15 if they make some money from their posts.

hey guys, lets not move away from the topic.
We can discuss it and earn more from this.
I think that its a great suggestion sent by Brad. But the main thing is does people really pay when they are not oblized to do so? Well I won't pay...
Is getting donations a better way to earn revenues? Are there any legal issues related to taking donations?
If it works then it can be a good way to earn money. |

I would think that, unless you were a non-profit or special-interest group, this would not be a very reliable or efficient way of making money.
I can see where it would work in certain instances but you would definitely:
A. Have to understand your market very well to even attempt it (ie. if your market is teenagers, don't count on it)
and
B. Have to provide enough quality content that people will want to pay you (and if it's that good, you could possibly be charging for it anyway.)
I can think of a site that is in one of my areas of interest that is very highly ranked (PR7 and only about 1 year old), offers great content, is not non-profit, and has a Paypal donation button on it. He also offers a subscription newsletter and has some affiliate links. I remember him saying at one point that someone had given him a very generous donation ($100 maybe?) but I don't know him well enough to ask more details.

I just checked out stats and we seem to be getting about 15% of the people who take action (accept or reject the pledge notice) pay us the $15.
I actually don't see any legal issues with donations. In fact, there may be less legal obligations. Since this is a donation, how can someone complain that they did not get what they expected in exchange, or complain about how you used the money.

I have the penetration in market which is sensitive and have visitors who may wish to donate. The topic is definitely sensitive. I also provide some good quality contents, I can see it by the waypeople are responding and flushing in their queries.
I have decided of asking donations in my site. |

Only one I can think of is that the money would be considered taxable income in most areas, unless your site is supporting a charity or some other organization that is exempt.

The SBI program talked about this site but not about donations.
Here is a creative way to ask for donations.
