Hi,
This seems like a smart thing to do, so here I go:
Here is my site: http://dvd-rental-advisor.com
It just went live last week and I'm in the submitting/finding links stage.
Any advice would be very helpful - is my text okay? am i trying to monatize before i create useful content? is there potential in this idea or has it been done to death?
Please don't be gentle - i can take it! All constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Finn,
Your website looks good but lacks content. What exactly do you want your visitors to do when they visit your website? I imagined myself as a first time visitor who had come through a link or search engine and had a look around - but there was nothing telling me what action I should take.
What exactly is the purpose of the site? Is it to give tips on renting DVD's and direct vistors to an affiliate link? Also maybe consider setting up a newsletter that vistors can subscribe to - that way your visitors are not lost forever.
Hope this helps,

Thanks for the feedback Declan. I agree with you that the content is pretty light. I seem to have fallen into the very common trap of thinking that people will just come and click (despite all the good advice I've read!)
I think right now my site lacks a specific focus and that is what I must work on by creating valuable content for my readers.
I've signed up for your newsletter, so I look forward to receiving more great advice. Thanks Declan.
Anyone else with comments? I'd really appreciate any feedback!

You are welcome my friend. You seem to be on the right track so it is only a matter of time before you will see success if you make some changes to your site and give your visitors lots of quality content.

Thanks for that. Download and (re)read 'Make Your Site Sell' by fellow Canadian, Ken Evoy. He gives some excellent information on how to monetize your website.

I love it! The beautiful, clean, attractive layout creates a very strong first impression.
You're not making the mistakes many affiliates sites make - that's giving visitors too many choices.
If you haven't already, you could test the site with a few pay-per-click purchases from pay-per-click search engines and see if you achieve sales.
It's a good, quick way of discovering whether a site works. Your site has a very strong focus and ought to do well, I reckon.
If you're aiming to be found in search engines, you'll need to add a lot more pages, targeting a lot of different key phrases. Also, if you want other sites to link to you need to provide lots of content so they'll think your site is worth linking to.
I have a web design file called "attractive sites". I've put yours in there.
Well done! _________________ Allan Gardyne

Hi Finn,
The design is very nice and clean. I like the colours and they work together.
The only suggestion I would make is to add some content. Looking at the layout I would tell instantly that there isn't much content.
Once you've got some content on there, I think your on to a winner.

Wow, thanks for the feedback everybody. I really appreciate the encouragement. I was seriously considering pulling the whole site down and moving on to something else, but your words have made me believe in my idea again. Thank you.
I'll definitely get to work building more content, articles, etc. I have no shortage of ideas in that area.

Thank you Allan, I'm definitley honoured to be included! I wanted to make the design as clean and simple as possible - both for the user but also for me when I'm updating/adding pages.
Thanks a lot everybody. I'll keep at it and let you know how I get on!
Best,
Finn |
