Hi,

I just wanted to know who's the most successful
"search engine guru" online...

where success = how fast he/she can take any given
keyword and get a top ranking in it.

What's his/her website, how can I get ahold of him/her, and
what are the best books should I be reading to understand how
search engines work better?

Where do you get your news on search engines?

It's incredibly imporant that I find alot of great resources,
and I'll greatly appreciate everyones help.

Thanks,
Jason Cox

Hello Jason.

Planet Ocean, in the main...

...but also...

Michael Campbell's books and newsletter
Danny Sullivan's Search Engine Watch
Brent Winters' MarketPosition newsletter
Sumantra Roy's newsletter...

...and not forgetting PayPerClickSearchEngines.com.

Hope this helps,
Charlie.

Stephen Mahaney's Planet Ocean is a really extensive source.

He wrote the book "The Unfair Advantage Book On Winning The Search Engine Wars" and updates it every month. He also publishes a valuable monthly newsletter called Search Engine News, which is a must-read.

Some of things his company recommends are controversial, such as cloaking, so you have to make up your own mind which advice you take, but at least you'll be well informed.

For a much simpler, easier to understand introduction, I recommend Ken Evoy's "Make Your Site Sell", which has a 300-page section on search engine optimization. http://makemy.sitesell.com/myss

...and all the other people Charlie recommended.

Plus Mike Grehan. He interviews the guys who work for the search engines - but you have to wade through a lot of stuff to find the gems.

Hi Jason,

I would just like to pick up on what Charlie & Allan mentioned, I recently started a new campaign with the help of Ken Evoy's SBI & MYSS.

Also I have been studying Sumantra's email course-his service is a little expensive for a beginner, but I hear about him all over the net as a real "Search Engine Guru", Plus I have become one of his affiliates & beleive me he really does give you a lot of help & guidance, just as Ken Evoy does with his affiliates.

You can find more about them at http://www.workfromhome-free.com

The above url is my domain, this way you can see how the SBI & 1SearchRanking works.

Or you can simply go to your favorite search engine & type in Ken Evoy/Sumantra Roy & see what it brings up.

Good Luck . Laughing

Hi few more questions!

1. Anyone out there have a website with high listings
under the keywords they wanted?

2. Where is this ocean planet place located at?

3. Who online has the most success records for
getting the top search engine rankings?

Thanks,
Jason Cox

I have read a bit of Mike's stuff, and although I am sure he knows what he is talking about, I have to be honest and say that I found it heavy going.

I found it more than a bit "academic" for my taste.

The one caveat with forums is, that you never know quite how well "qualified" a poster is, in many cases. When it comes to SEO, a little knowledge can be a very dangerous thing, I think. It's vital to know who it is doing the advising.

Just my opinion,
Charlie.

P.S. Planet Ocean's site is here...

(That is a direct link. I do not earn any commission.)

Hi Charlie,

To be honest I don't think the question is "who does the advising" Its who does the reading.

Every person is entitled to state what they think to be true or correct, regardless of experience.

The reader must decide whether to accept the information or not.

I know there are "guidelines" but all forums are open to trouble, Maybe what would be acceptable would be if the Admin was to veiw all post first.

Maybe this would help to remove the "blah, blah" of many posts? Question

Just My Opinion.
Nigel.

Pause and think about that. If you want to find a page that ranks well in a search engine, all you have to do is type a keyword into a search engine and see which page is No.1.

For example, if you go to Google and do a search for "cheap computers" or "cheap computer" (no need to use quotation marks - most people don't), you'll find that Rupert's site is still No.1 and No.2.

Here's the article in which he describes how he did that:
http://www.AssociatePrograms.com/search/affiliate-programs.shtml

However, remember that OFF-page factors are very important, as well as ON-page factors. If Rupert wants to retain those No.1 and No.2 rankings, he'll probably need to get more sites to link to him with that key phrase in the link.

I don't know, but beware. Lots of marketers make all sorts of extraordinary claims about getting "insane" traffic to their sites. If you haven't already, I recommend you install the Alexa.com toolbar and when you see extraordinary claims made have a look at the site's Alexa.com ranking. I've seen extravagant claims made about marketing sites that aren't even in the top 200,000 sites.

I quite agree, Nigel. I'm not in favour of censorship for the sake of it.

I was just meaning with an area like SEO where there is a lot of confusion and false information floating about, the caveat is... "reader beware".

All the best,
Charlie.
