Hi...
About 4 months ago I created a home business site and have tried everything to get it ranked on the search engines. I have tried everything from tweaking the keywords to having relevant content on the site.
I would appreciate any tips on how I get my site ranked as I have done searches online and some of the other results that have come up have been surprising!
The website address is http://www.A1Home-Business.com for anyone who would like to take a look over the site and maybe give me some feedback on to what I may or may not be doing which is effecting my rankings.

More backlinks from other websites in your industry. This is BY FAR the most important factor.

Thanks for the reply. But the problem with trying to get backlinks is that other sites don't really want to know you unless you have a Google ranking of 5 or 6. This could result in getting poor quality links and ending up like a link farm.

Thanks for the reply! I have tried various directories but they seem to take forever and a day to get listed esp. DMOZ! I have had my site added to plenty of other business portals and directories.

I disagree ... that's just an excuse  Getting links in from quality sites is far more important than their rating. And exchanging links with low PR sites won't result in poor quality and looking like a link farm if you do it right.
There are many posts on this forum about getting quality links, writing articles for distribution, posting on related forums, and even a list of tons of directories to submit to.
While it can take time to find the sites, it is absolutely essential to your site's success that you get them.

Declan, I did some research on Wordtracker and found this result for the phrase "home business", which is the main phrase on your main page:
"home business" 1.300 2266 763 3950000
The phrase "home business" has a KEI of 1.3. According to Wordtracker, a "good" KEI is over 10. The phrase "home business" appears on 3.9 million web pages. That's a lot of competition.
However, most people search without using quotes. A search on Google for "home business" (without quotes) finds 16 million pages.
The No.1 ranked home business site has a PageRank of 7 and the No.10 ranked site has a PageRank of 6. Try the search and examine those sites. Try the same search on Yahoo! Those sites are your main competition.
Can you do better than them? That's what you're trying to do.
The Google Toolbar shows that the No.1 ranked site has 4,210 backlinks - and Google doesn't display all backlinks.
You're being hugely ambitious. You've chosen a task that only someone with steely determination should tackle.
Some people don't take KEI numbers too seriously. They're much more interested in the potential traffic.
The good news is that Wordtracker predicts that - for Google alone - a very useful 763 people will search for "home business" every day. And that's just on Google! So if you can beat the competition, you'll have a wonderful winner.

I used to buy one-day subscriptions to Wordtracker. (The free trial version is interesting but too limited, I reckon.) It's very cheap for one day.
Now I have a year's subscription and use it to do keyword research for every web page I build.
