use the hyphens if you want the keywords to be read by the SE's and to make a difference in link anchor text. Otherwise, I would find a better domain than bestnewyork, something snazzy and brandable.

Even as a newbie, I agree completely. My question is this. Why not do both?

In other words, use a search engine friendly name (such as "Ferret-Care-and Feeding.com "as the official name of your site (the one you register with SBI) so it will be optimized. At the same time register a shorter, jazzier version of the name ("FerretCare.com") or a totally different name like "FerretsRule.com" with a cheap domain name provider and use that as a redirect to the official name.

Also use that one in your business cards, e-mails, signature lines, advertising or in Pay per click listings. It will never be listed by the search engines, but who cares? The objective for this name is to have people recognize it, remember it and use it to get to your site. The other name is only for the search engine positioning.

I am new so I fully recognize that I could be totally wrong. If so, please tell me as my aim is to do the things which will be most successful for me, not to be "right" or an opinionated jerk in a forum.

No, you are right and this topic was covered extensively in another older thread with the same result you came to.
