This question was posted in another topic by Frank.
It's a great question, one I'd love to know the answer to.
How many people actually use the old search engines these days?
Which is more popular PPC or the oldies? Which is better to market too? BTW Both is not a valid answer. When marketing your site, which search engine type is more important to you?

I'm somewhat of a newbie at SEM (search engine marketing), but I'll answer this one to the best of my knowledge...
Regarding PPC, I believe Overture and Google AdWords are the two most popular. Personally, I am shooting for a top ten listing on site/page optimization alone (this depends on your site and your keywords), but have heard that it helps A LOT to run an AdWords campaign to drive clicks to the site/page (increasing popularity). Some with more experience should be able to step in and confirm that either way.
The three engines I notice traffic from in my site stats are Google (most), Yahoo (a handful) and AOL Search (a few stragglers). Of course, I cant say if this is because I dont rank well on any others, or if the others just arent used that often (or used by MY targeted market), etc...
As far as my own searching goes, I use Google exclusively. I might wander over to the other SE's to check ranking on a site I am working on, but thats about it.

I would have to say that google is extremely important to me.
The pay per clicks are important as well especially Overture.
The reason Overture is so important is because other search engines pull from it to fill in content. That's my understanding and I may be wrong.
My thinking is that I need to use meta tags etc to get into google and all the other spider search engines and I need to locate valuable keywords to bid on for the pay per click SEs.
Would you agree with my thinking?

They are ALL Google referrals, since Google powers both Yahoo and AOL.
So you are really ONLY seeing referrals from Google.

You should be getting referrals from MSN.com also, as they are one of the TOP 3 search sites, which means you need good rankings in Inktomi.

That is why Google currently refers 76% of all search engine/directory referrals.

I heard that there are still some search engines that use Meta tags. I don't remember which one(s).
I include Meta Tags in my website, but I don't spend a lot of time on them. I inclue the description and keywords, and thats about it.
Anyone know whose SE the Slurp spider belongs to?

To answer my Slurp question. I just got spidered by Slurp today. It belongs to Inktomi.
Scooter is AltaVista
GoogleBot is Google
Slurp is Inktomi
?? = Jeeves (I need to wait for them to spider me again)
Alexa is IA Archiver (no clue who that is)

Hello to all,
My question is what is more effective, 
1) To bid on many less focused keywords lets say 100 but still targeted to your concept, with this bidding method you can get a top 20 ranking from "less popular" PPC's or
2) To aim for the top 5/10 ranking with Overture from about 10 very targeted keywords.
I would be greatfull to hear what you have to say on this.

I think it depends on the niche...
Do a small number of highly popular keywords dominate? (Caution: the perils of MatchDriver.) Or is the niche's traffic shared more evenly by 20 to 50 terms? Also, is your priority fast traffic, or cheap traffic?
Either way, don't assume all traffic will be equally responsive. It won't, and the only way to find out, is to test. I suggest you tackle 100s of keywords (but bid low) initially, and measure the response levels by search term. Once you've got a list of responsive search terms, you can afford to "roll out" a bit by paying higher bids to get more traffic.
Incidentally, you may be best sending different PPC-sourced traffic to different pages altogether. For example, people searching with "buy widgets" could be sent to a much more salesy page than those searching by "widget info".
Whatever you do, make sure you track all your PPC traffic by adding a unique tag for each keyword bid on. Whether you use software or trawl your logs manually, you must distinguish where it all came from.

Thanks for the feedback, my thoughts exactly-Ive decided to go with 100 words at a low bid to start of with, secoundly i'm able to track due to the SBI it as the facility to do this automatic.
However I thought it would be good to get some "reassurance" from some knowledgeable people like yourself.

Which would you use? Personally I avoid search engines that take money for placement and my logs say that users do too. |
