1. My average revenue per click has steadily dropped over the past few weeks so that now it is about 1/6 of what it was. For example ( these are example numbers only - not my numbers) if the average income per click was $.60 it is now $.10. Evil or Very Mad

My theme is tightly focused on keywords that are popular and well paying KW not some esoteric niche that no-one is interested in.

2. Google consistently under-reports my Adsense impressions. On a typical day I might get 500 page views. Since the Google ads are on every page of my site then Google should report about 500 ad impressions. But instead Google AdSense reports show maybe 100 to 200 impressions. Evil or Very Mad

This is not just one day but consistently every day they report only 20% to 50% of my true ad impressions. This makes me wonder if they are also under-reporting the income.

I am ready to drop Adsense from my site.

Regards all,
Peter

I saw a drop in average pay per click, but impressions and CTR remain constant. So I don't think that Adsense is the problem. I know the reduction in earnings is due to several factors on my site, not least of which the more popular pages are the lower paying terms, the ability of advertisers to opt out of contextual marketing, and the conversion change that Google made in early April.

You might want to look at the number of your visitors with javascript disabled, and those that use browsers that don't support iframes. Either of those factors can seriously impact the impressions Adsense records. The other possibility is your traffic is high in SE bot or other bot traffiking as opposed to real people, these bots won't trigger the javascript required to show Adsense.

Thanks for the reply Debs.

1. This is not Bot traffic. These are real visitors bought and paid for from a ppc SE. Unless the SE has bots that run through their own listings and autoclick them to generate fraudulant income for themselves. Not likely but anything is possible I guess.

2. I can't believe that 75% of my visitors have javascript disabled.

3. I don't know what iFrames are but I doubt Google would create their ads with technology that 75% of surfers would not be able to see their ads. Besides, IE has 90% of the web browser market and Google ads show up just fine in IE.

Yesterday I paid for 550 visitors. my logs verify that I got the visitors. AdSense only recorded 125 ad impressions. I must be missing something very fundamental here. This is not right.

Plus the income per click has dropped so low that I lose money on visitors that cost me less than a penny each. Nothing has changed on my site. It's the same pages and the same ads that were generating decent worthwhile income just weeks ago.

Peter, I would drop the PPC for a week or two and then compare. If you impressions get more in line with your traffic, then I would say you are getting fraudulent clicks from the PPC.

I agree, only about 9 to 13% of visitors have js disabled overall, and my site shows only 2%.

Can it be an effect of the latest virus sasser and Norton Firewall blocking?
I myself have seen a drop in both revenue and clickthrough rate now in the first days of May Evil or Very Mad .

I wonder if this can be an effect of the sasser virus which have crippled Windows 2000,XP and 3000 networks and machines.

A lot of networks and individual users may have updated or raised their security levels using Norton.

In the latest release of Norton, ads are blocked by default including affiliate links and Adsense.
Which by the way is crazy.

I guess that Norton have asked costumer what they want.
They want no more spam, popups blocker and they want not the be slowed down in their surfing by annoying ads.

The problem is that affiliate links and adsense are not annoying ads.
Annoying ads are thing that use flash and blinks and are created for branding by ad agencies.

I fear that the drop in revenue is created by a combination of virus creators, Norton incompetent surveys and large ad agencies.
I hope that Norton gets a house call from Google, CJ and other large players.

Hi Per Strandberg,

I have also noticed a large descrease in clickthru rates and the percentage of a clicks earnings amount. I also found that the downturn had started at the begining of this month. I just hope things will improve soon.

Am I the only one??

I have Google ads on very page but the Adsense logs show only about 10% to 20% of my visitors are seeing the ads. Yesterday was ridiculous. I had 329 unique visitors with 545 page views. Yet Google says I had 43 ad impressions. Apparenly the ads are being blocked somehow.

Am I the only one? Isn't anybody else seeing this?

My impressions are just fine, but it would be nice if I could have more clickthrus than what I actually do. But, then I guess they are better than nothing.

Keep in mind that advertisers' bidding practices can affect average revenue per click.

A couple of advertisers for a keyword I target apparently got into a bidding war a while back. The number 1 and 2 positions for the keyword were over $10 per click. My average revenue per click shot up during that period.

They have since lowered their bids back in line with other advertisers and my average revenue per click has returned to "normal" as a result.

In other words, if you really want to do a thorough analysis of average revenue per click, you'll need to keep a regular check on what advertisers are bidding for the particular keywords.

If there is something else you can insert in the space on your site currently occupied by AdSense and earn more money with equal or less effort, that would probably be a good business decision.

But be careful that you don't make an emotional decision that's foolish from a business perspective. I consider AdSense publishing to be a business. In my opinion, a lot of people in business end up doing foolish things by making decisions based on feelings & emotion rather than thought, logic, analysis, etc.

That's been a frequent complaint concerning AdSense for months. Although you will find people who offer speculation & opinions, I've yet to see anyone offer a good solid reason.

Personally, my response is not to worry about that which I can't change. I put that time & energy into publishing more pages, sites, & good quality content.

Actually I think there have been some good, solid explanations about the differences between site page views and Adsense impressions. the best explanation for such a big discrepancy that I can think of is the way the hosts tracking records spiders and bots that traverse your site. Spiders and bots don't trigger javascript, so Adsense impressions won't record. The question is, has anyone bothered to test it?

If you can add a simple javascript to each page to "register" the page view (any tracking script should be able to do this), and then compare these impressions with the Adsense impressions and site page views recorded. See which two are closest.

If Adsense and Tracking are close, then your site tracking is wrong. If Tracking and Page views are close, then Adsense is wrong and you have proof to offer Google to help fix it.

If your site tracking is wrong, then you need to find another method to track, another host, or similar.

Hello Debs,

I've had this idea for some time. Basically my adsense impressions are down up to 2-3 times than those of my statistics(log based).

Visitorville, which you promote, I think is javascript based, so it should do the job. Also any other simple tracker like extreme-dm.com would be ok.
I'm planing to test this in the future.

If there are some of you who would test this too, please report back here.
(you need to include the code in every page where the adsense code is present)

Thanks,
John.

I've already compared and tested with Visitorville and have results relating to my site that is hosted on SBI. I wanted to prod some others to check things before they panic and make accusations that simply don't hold up under closer scrutiny.

*edit* I just browsed Sitepoint and found this extremely interesting post on Stats packages.

http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133966

Basically there is a difference between various stats programs and/or log analyzers, and how they are configured to count the various statistics on a site.

*end edit*

Adsense HAS dropped per click. There is no doubt about it. I have watched it closely for some time. It is very irritating.

As to Visitorville: It doesn't count correctly: Repeat visitors are not at all in the counting. What's more: It doesn't count all new visitors either. But it is a great tool for watching movement, frequency, where visitors come from and more. For exact number of visitors, page views etc. I rely on SBI stats.
