Hey, Guys! I need to ask- what is a blog/blogging? There's a lot of references to 'it', but a clear definition would really help! TIA!

Blogs are published diaries/rants on a topic--can range from serious to free association. They can be done by one person or a group. Check some out at www.blogspot.com and you'll see what I mean.

I thought this article at Microdoc News gave a really good view of what blogs are and what they may become.

Blogs are software programs and its been shortened from the traditional name 'weblog'. They can be installed on servers as well as many internet sites like blogger and blogspot provide you with an area where you can blog. Its essentially like a personal diary/journal on the internet. They also allow for people to comment on the entries and rate them. There are multiple categories of them too, some of them just rants (interesting reads), photoblogs and techie blogs being the popular ones.

The popular blogging software are Movable Type ( http://www.movabletype.org/ ) and GreyMatter ( http://www.greymatter.org/ ) and they are both quite nice.

If you google blogging software then you would get hundreds of them.

Take Care

How does blogging differ from a forum? Isn't a forum blogging, with the moderator as the main blogger?

I'm new at this so please excuse my ignorance

Hi Norm

Interesting question.

Indeed, there isn't much agreement, even between *experts*, about what exactly constitutes a blog.

The answer I tend to agree with most is Dave Winer's definition as he discusses in an article for Harvard Law School.

"What makes a Weblog a Weblog?"
http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/whatMakesAWeblogAWeblog

I quote from that article:

"That is the essential element of weblog writing, and almost all the other elements can be missing, and the rules can be violated, imho, as long as the voice of a person comes through, it's a weblog."

That's my view too Smile

Everything else is related to presentation of the same content, and reader feedback. Put it as a series of webpages and it becomes a website or portal. Present it as a threaded discussion and it becomes a forum. Or list it in the form of a daily post with feedback accessed through a link and you get today's conventional blog.

Incidentally, a very exciting site I recently came across shows a way to make transition between blog and forum format possible with just a mouse click!

Check out Mark Carey's WEB DAWN...
http://www.markcarey.com/web-dawn/

Fascinating!

I've also recently compiled a short ebook primer titled "Blog Basics for Marketers" that you can download for free at
http://www.BlogProfits.com/basics/

Hope this helps.

Hello Dr Mani.

I must admit, I've been a bit unsure as to what exactly was or wasn't a blog. Call me old fashioned, but I think the old name "web log" was a bit more self explanatory, but anyway.

Incidentally, Dr Mani has recent experience of putting a blog to good use...

Though too modest to mention it here, he recently raised a large sum towards helping pay for children's heart operations in India, by staging a 24 hour marathon blog, with a little bit of help from his friends. Great effort! Smile

Also, I reckon Paul Myers of http://talkbiz.com deserves a mention for his generous add on offer to his subscribers. If you're lurking out there, thanks Paul.

Anyway that's enough praise for one morning. Don't want to make a habit of it! Wink

Cheers,
Charlie.
