Puzzled by Rejection from Commission Junction

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering whether anyone can shed some light on this....

Pne of the products I use is an ebook cover creator program from Laughing Bird, and when I went to join their affiliate program (because I use and like the product) I was directed to Commission Junction.

I filled in all the details, and gave my new Site Build It site as the URL, (www.writing-for-success-online.com) since I'll be doing a lot of selling from this via affiliate links. I have other, longer established sites as well, but thought it best to stick to one for the moment.

I'm planning on targeting the US market mostly, but I was rejected by CJ. I can only assume this is because I live in Australia, even though I have .com on my sites, not .com.au as the extension. Unless it's because my SBI site has been up only just over 3 weeks? Or might it be because I use ADSL with Telstra and I don't have a static IP? All in all, I'm a bit puzzled about why I would be rejected as not being a 'bona fide business customer' and why I'm ineligible.

I know I've read that if you send a polite letter to Affiliate Commission programs asking to be included even after being rejected, pointing out that you're selling to the US market, then they'll often reverse their decision, but when I right-clicked on the CJ email the address was 'no-response@cj.com' which leads me to suspect any email sent there might be consigned to the trash.

I'd really appreciate any advice on how I can handle this. Obviously I want to be accepted as a publisher with CJ! Here's a cut and paste of their letter to me:

Dear Marg McAlister,

We regret to inform you that your application for a publisher
account in the Commission Junction network has been denied
due to ineligibility for membership.

Only bona fide business customers may apply and Commission Junction
reserves the right to reject any application that does not meet
reasonable Internet business standards, as such standards may
evolve over time.

I am not sure why you were rejected. I'd dig around in the CJ site and pull up an email address you can use.

But as to their email, I think the wording is rather crude. They should just state that they reserve the right to reject any businesses, and leave the whole "bona fide" bit out...

I think CJ is getting cockier and cockier. They are gonna be down the tube if they keep up their "we are the boss" antics. I have heard some people are starting to get really upset at their actions.

Sometimes merchants have a filter which automatically rejects applications from affiliates who live outside the USA. Although I think that this is daft (after all its where your site visitors live and not where you live that matters..) what usually works is to write a nice personal email to the merchant explaining how you like their site and product, how you would like to feature it on your page, how you are likely to get them some good sales (ie: hint that they are losing money by rejecting you!). Perhaps give an example of how you have got good sales for other merchants (ie: you are a successful affiliate). Explain that your site visitors are mostly from the US (if applicable) - although something like software can be bought (downloaded) from anywhere, so it seems a bit strange for Laughing Bird to reject non US affiliates....

Sometimes I even say something along the lines of them being my first choice but being rejected means I would probably be promoting their competitor/s if I cannot promote them........ say this diplomatically of course, not in a threatening way! Smile

As for the noresponse at cj email addy, the contact details at CJ for laughing bird are Contact: Mr. Marc Sylvester ; Email: info AT thelogocreator.com - so perhaps try emailing them direct and mark the subject as being for attn of Marc Sylvester ?

It's possible CJ decided your website does not (yet) generate sufficient traffic and visitors- they typically want to get their advertisers/merchants affiliates who have websites that will get the traffic and thus more sales for their merchants. So if you registered a fairly new site with them and they figured that out or look at Alexa for traffic stats, then it wouldn't bode well.

Maybe you can register using one of your more popular websites that has the traffic/visitor numbers they'd want. Also, sometimes on the individual company websites they ask for unique visitors and page views, but I think if you apply to cj on their main website that you may not even get asked for that there.

By the way, if you email them with just a general question from someone who may want to join as a publisher, "do you accept publishers from Australia", then you'll have their answer to that question you're wondering about or here's their phone - 805-560-0777

I signed up with CJ and got the same letter that you got. So I signed up again and used my husbands name, business name, and bank act name that is the same as the business name and it went through just fine. However that does not mean that your site will be accepted by all the CJ businesses. Out of about 15 only 2 turned me down. I signed up about 2 months before I put my site up because I needed the affiliate links to complete the site.

Dear Eric, Mark, Cody, Liz and Deb,

Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply. This really has been useful.

I decided the best thing to do to start with would be to phone them and talk to a human! (Thanks for the phone contact, Liz.) So I did, and found:

(1) that I would not be rejected because I live in Australia

(2) the 2 most likely reasons for rejection are (a) that I already have an account with them (I don't) or (b) that I filled in some fields incorrectly (especially the one wanting the tax advice - which is not relevant to me.)

The lady with whom I spoke recommended clicking on the 'lost password' link and stating my problem there, since that goes through to client services anyway - and they'd see if they could sort it out.

Mark: thanks for the contact email with Marc and Laughing Bird - maybe they have specified no-one outside US or Canada or UK? That's worth a try too.

Deb, someone else emailed privately and suggested, as you did, that I try signing up from a different computer, so I might try that if all else fails.

I have a brand new site and I live in New Zealand I wasn't rejected by CJ. So there must be some other reason.

Hi there,

I also live in New Zealand and have successfully applied to CJ. I have however been turned down for some of the more lucrative programmes on the basis of my NZ address. This makes absolutely no sense to me as the internet is global. I have taken the initiative and writen to the programs in question to no avail. I am currently looking into getting a US mailing address. One of the companies I have looked at has suggested that I need an IRS Identification Number. Has any one else come across this?

I had written to the programs that turned me down and was told it was because of my postal address. I replied to them saying nicely that it did not make sense to decline someone because of their postal address as the Internet was global and it didn't matter where one lived. One program wrote back repeating themselves e.g. Market only to US UK and Canada and the others never replied.

There is obviously people making money outside of the US without promoting these programs so I will probably just focus on something else but seems a shame.

BTW it was my dot com address that was turned down.
