Hello to all,
My question is that someone said/or I read that without a "sitemap" on your domain , there would be no chance of good SEO ranking/linking.
If this is so, how would I best do this & what kind of keywords would you use for a "sitemap".
Should the sitemap be simple like a directory/or with advertising on page?.
Please Help.
Joe.

Joe, there are a ton of posts on here that go into great detail about sitemaps, have you tried a search?

Hi Joe,

Just my thoughts...
A sitemap/sitemaps is almost essential. As far as SE listing goes, if a SE finds your index page and you have a link to your sitemap on your index (home) page then the spider can follow the links to all your pages.. Bingo! more pages listed.
Also as far as PR (Google) goes, most of your link partners will link to your index page. If all your pages are easily reachable from your index page the PR will trickle down through your site.

Always try to have content on your sitemap, not just links. A brief description following each link is good (use some keywords).
You can name your sitemap whatever. Let's say your site theme is Widgets. You have lots of pages optimized for keywords related to green Widgets. So, a ( disguised) sitemap could be titled " All about Green Widgets" linking to "little Green Widgets" " big Green Widgets" "low fat Green Widgets" etc.
There is nothing that says you can only have one sitemap... so, another could be Red Widgets.
Not a good idea to have more than 50 links on one page.
Hope this helps.
All the best,

Can't really see the point of sitemaps. All my pages (except two that I don't want to get listed) are spidered and listed regularly. Works fine without sitemaps. Just be sure they are interlinked. _________________ DatabaseDesigner

Sometimes SE's won't go deep into a site at first, sitemaps help to get all pages within 2 clicks of the homepage which some SE's give greater weight to in ranking.
Also, by listing all your pages in a sitemap(s) you are sure all of your pages are linked somewhere, which comes in handy sometimes
Besides, they are also considered another content page that pretty much builds itself from the Title and description tags of the pages on your site.

Yup, very handy.
One of my websites is getting rather large, so I put up a site map to help my visitors get around. It proved to be very beneficial and is one of the top entry pages into my website. Now I just need to start splitting it up since it's getting too long.

Start a site from the beginning with a plan to use sitemaps... take it from the been there - NOT DONE THAT camp.
Second... the best part about Allan's post is his mention of YAHOO.
Yahoo for Allan... glad to see you posting more. I need to follow your lead. _________________ Gary
