Post subject: Linking stategy for multiple sites.

Let's say a webmaster has two or more sites. What linking strategy is recommended? How should s/he go about linking these sites for the sake of increasing page rank/link popularity? What should s/he avoid? What if those sites had related themes... would one or two links be enough? What's the maximum number of links that should be exchanged between these sites?
Help.... There are more questions than answers.

First off, ideally the sites should be hosted on seperate servers. A shared hosting account or virtual server with a single IP isn't as good as seperate IP addresses in terms of link 'points'.

Links from one home page to another home page score better. But this isn't always practical or desireable. In general links score better the shallower they are in the site eg a link on or from www.mysite.com/mypage/ will score better than www.mysite.com/mypage/myotherpage/

Related sites score better. One link either way will do.
