Hello
Has anyone noticed any changes with yahoo. My links were completley wiped out ? I noticed there was a competitor with almost the same identical name that took my spot ! He is also in the payed placement program.
Any ideas
Thanks

Huge change with Yahoo, they dumped Google results and are now displaying their own. It isn't Inktomi, looks a little like AlltheWeb but not quite ... and the spider is called Yahoo-Slurp.

What they've done is quite interesting. The results are basically coming from Inktomi (or the Inktomi spider) but they are using a different algo to the pure Inktomi results.
The Yahoo Slurp crawler is just Inktomi's Slurp crawler re-named - same IPs as before. Also, Inktomi's paid inclusion program is showing on Yahoo - the only difference is that the URLs seem to show http://rdre1.yahoo.com at the start of them (Inktomi had http://rdrw1.inktomi.com/).
Yahoo/Inktomi also appears to have done a deal with LookSmart because LS paid inclusions are now part of the results.
Anyway, the Yahoo algo appears to basically be the same as Google's without the over-complicating that Google have done recently. Link popularity and anchor text are very important.
Cheers

Sean,
So would it be in my interest to pay for a submission to Inktomi with my URL's . I have lost about 50 hits a day from yahoo ?
Thanks

Basically I never recommend paying to get listed in Inktomi. Once you pay you find yourself in a bit of a trap. If you stop paying, they'll remove you and paying for just some of pages can make it difficult to get your whole site indexed.
I've never paid Inktomi and they have crawled about 15 000 pages on 3 sites in the last month.
The best advice I can give is to keep working on getting more links to the site. If Inktomi sees that your site is important, they'll crawl it.
If you can't wait for that to happen then I guess paying is an option - I just don't think it's the best option.
Cheers

I'm getting good hits from Yahoo. This somehow reminds me what I use to get from MSN and Google about 7-8 months ago. I can almost recall the similar results that I use to get those days and the same ranking as well. I lost it when Google did Florida ...
Right now I see that Yahoo is displaying them. I start to realize this when I see a jump in my Google Adsense earning. I was wondering which website was contributing to this. Then it was my computer website. Took a look at most search engine referrers. Actually I checked Google, MSN and Yahoo and finally found that I am really getting a lot of my top ranking for that computer site, except this time, on Yahoo.
If this continues, then I guess optimizing for Yahoo isn't that hard. But just thinking about how to get indexed. That's all.
I am hearing the MSN is quitely starting their own search engine as well. Right now, kinda like thinking ... if MSN is starting their own search engine ... and you can see that their add site only displays Overture and Advertising as inclusion option ... how can you really add your site to MSN. Does Inktomi still works? _________________ Iszuddin Ismail aka Kidino

Basically, it's the same as the others - links, links and more links. MSN has been quite actively crawling sites for over a year without anyone being able to "add a site".
I'm guessing that both Yahoo and MSN will have learnt from the way Google works and they will be constantly adding new pages. To be successful, a SE needs to be "current". So, it will benefit them to find new sites quickly.
Cheers

Good advise ... yet still I think PFI is a good investment as oppose to PPC if you can get your site optimized to the first page. _________________ Iszuddin Ismail aka Kidino

I guess. It's a bit of a catch 22 situation though. You won't rank well in many cases unless you have links to your site and if you have links to your site they'll index you for free anyway.
Also, I've heard a few "horror" stories in the past when people have been pretty much fully indexed by Inktomi for free and the submitted a new page via PFI - only to see all of their other pages removed. This was about a year ago so I don't know if they are still doing it (I hope not).
Anyway, it's only $39 for a page so I guess it's no big deal. Personally, I'd probably choose PPC over PFI because you know what you are getting - you can control where you show up and you know exactly how many visitors you'll get (it also won't affect getting your whole site indexed for free).
Cheers
