I wanted to add in that you should definitely go with 'dog-food' as a file name, versus 'dogfood' or 'dog_food'. Using the hyphen allows Google to read the file name as "dog food". The underscore is not read as a space.

Hi Lynn,

You're absolutely right! Google (and most likely the other SE's) can only recognize words within file names if they are separated by hyphens.

From what I understand, when you create a filename such as "greatdogfood.htm", SE's read the first word they can make out, in this case "great" (can anyone confirm this for me?).

I haven't tested this out, but it sounds unlikely. Suppose the SE's can recognize the fist word, what happens when the second word extends the first word?

Eg, "dogstuff.htm". Is it "dog stuff" or "dogs tuff"?

I think that the file name "dogstuff.htm" would only be relevant for the search query "dogstuff".

Anyway, nice post Lynn!

Hi Lynn and Jon

Very interesting thread.

I have noticed that when I run a search on Google for :

dog_stuff

that Google does recognize the underscore as a space , as per the sites listed #5, 6, 7, 9, 10.

I.e. Google recognize "dog_stuff" as "dog stuff" too.

All the best,

Harith

Hi Harith,

If you look closely at the search results for your query "dog_stuff", you'll see that Google has returned results that contain the two words connected by the underscore.

Look for the web site http://www.dogmap.ch/dog_stuff.htm in the results and you'll see that they have "dog stuff" (without the underscore) in their title, except it hasn't been recognized as part of the query.

If you search for "dog-stuff", you'll see that Google has recognized the two words without the hyphen in the search results.

I hope this helps,

Good morning Jon

Actually Google has returned results of "dog stuff" in addition to "dog_stuff", when running a search "dog_stuff"

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=dog_stuff&btnG=Google+Search

Here are the top 5,6,7,8,9,10 listings:

- DogMap - Dog Stuff

- Cox the Saddler Dog Stuff

- Hitch n Hike Dog Stuff

- Dog Stuff

- DOG STUFF

- Dog Stuff

Have a great day,

Harith

It's nice to meet you here to Lynn!

There's not alot to tell really. I've been spending far too much time participating in forums than actually doing anything productive. But, I suppose helping people out (or at least trying to) is more important than success and money. Right?

Besides that, I use my SEO knowledge to promote other peoples products in the SE's and read everything I can about the psychology of writing sales letters and doing business online. Which I find absolutely fascinating!

Have a great day Terry. Oops, I mean Lynn! Wink

Yeah, quite a few! But they're all non-marketing related and pretty boring unless you're interested in what they promote.

Here's one I put together a few weeks ago:
http://www.easy-guitar-tabs.com/

It's not the most profitable of the lot, but I like it all the same.

I have been toying with the idea of setting up a SEO resource for internet marketers and small businesses, but I'm not entirely sure yet.

If I do, I'll let you know!
