I saw a post from Allan in another forum that stated you should get listed in About.com. Do they have a free or pay per inclusion listing? It was always my understanding the only way to get into About is if you pay for a sponsored listing that appears at the bottom of the page.

I haven't ever used About.com for link building purposes, but I'm pretty sure that their main directory consists of their own articles and the paid listing are provided by Sprinks.com.

That link is for people who want to pay to get into Sprinks pay-per-click search engine. Sorry, but that won't help you get an article in About.com and it won't help your link popularity with Google.
The first time I ever had a web site mentioned by an About.com editor, I didn't do anything except create an interesting, useful web site that I promoted wherever I could. The About.com editor noticed it and decided to mention it.
You must START with something interesting and useful. That's the most important point of all. That's your challenge. If you rise to that challenge, you can find your site being mentioned in many places.
Also, once you've written an interesting, useful, original article, perhaps you can take action and persuade an About.com editor to mention it.
Here's a living, breathing current example...
As an experiment, I've just gone to About.com and done a search for "exit plans" because I wanted to see if anyone has written about the "escape plan" idea I described in my last newsletter.
I quickly found the Small Business Information section at About.com and found the email address of the editor. I've just written the following letter to him:

Hi Darrell
Here's an idea for an article for About.com.
Do you have an Escape Plan? I've just been in hospital being treated
for a life-threatening illness, and I've had plenty of time to think about
this. I wrote about it in my latest newsletter:
In your "Selling Your Business" article, what you say makes a lot of sense...
"The time to start thinking about selling your business begins in the start-up
stage and throughout the life cycle of your business."
However, on the Internet there are many thousands of small, mainly part-time
businesses whose owners didn't know about Exit Plans when they started.
So what they now need is an Escape Plan.
Anyway, just an idea. Hope you like it.
All the best.

Will Darrell pick up the idea? I don't know. He's probably extremely busy and utterly swamped with ideas.
If you submit an idea to an About.com editor, make sure it's a good one.
