Post subject: How are your keywords doing?

If you haven't noticed already, Google did an update this past weekend. Of the keywords I track in Google, I have a few back from the dead, several down or lost, and most stay the same. How did yours do? _________________ http://www.smallbusinessforum.com

What's significant about Wednesday? |

No - nothing is significant about wednesday.
I just wanted to state that it will take some days.
Starting on 24th of January - Austin will take some days to settle down.
Could also take some days more, until Google settles the dance. _________________ EL Bavaro |

the main keyword that I've been getting most of my visits from is not in top 10 anymore!!
I lost half of my traffic due to this. I don't know what caused it change my listing so drastically. Now Im not even listed in top 50.
This occurred shortly after I did a site submission with ineedhits.com. Would this have anything to do with it?
What could it be?
Thanks |

Brand, I would say it has more to do with Austin than your submission via INeedHits.
Give it a week or so, then check the forums to see what's recommended for a fix. You may want to subscribe to Sean's newsletter

Just found out about this neat little tool to help you find your ranking on Google:

Just thought I'd post here and let people know that Google is dancing again. I think you can see the new data at http://64.233.161.99 - much better results in my opinion.
Hopefully, if some of your pages have disappeared in the past, they'll be back on that data center.
Cheers

Hi Debs

If they are relevant, they should ... in theory. I got lots of new listings last time as well and my traffic increased slightly. The only problem was that I received listings for phrases that weren't really relevant to my content.
The best example of Google's problems that I can think of is the search results for "Search Engine Rankings Revealed" (the text I use to link to my eBook). I had (have) the number 4 & 5 listings but they aren't for the pages about my book - they are pages from my affiliate program directory - the food and drink category!
At least with the new results I'm at 2 & 3 and it is actually pages about my book that are listed. The fact that I'm ranked higher doesn't mean the results are better - the fact that relevant pages are now listed (instead of completely irrelevant pages) shows that there is an improvement (possibly).
Cheers

Thanks for the link, Sean.
I like the new results.
Rupert's SBI sites are back at No.1 and No.2 for "cheap computers". He also has No.1 spot for "dj tips" and No.2 for "dj equipment". Looks good to me.
However, I see that an old favorite of mine that had ranked well for years, a one-page affiliate site with few links to it, has now sunk without trace. I suppose I shouldn't complain about that!

Hi folks,
Sean my rankings are still a bit off but I'm giving it more time to see what happens when Google settles. I'm still seeing smartpages and sites with broken links ranking above me in certain areas which is....... somewhat annoying lol. Nothing worse than seeing somebody who's making an honest to God half-assed attempt at things, with less content and no true value ranking above you.
Anyways this set of Google results is marginally better for me than the last update but hey it ain't over till the fat lady sings.
Cheers

Hi Niall
Basically, the "new" algorithm follows on from the previous two updates. So, results haven't gone back to their pre Florida version. What they have done with the new update is fix the problems with Florida & Austin (to an extent).
The rankings that I lost haven't all gone back to where they were but at least they are now showing my pages that are relevant and they are all back around the top 5. To be honest, in some cases the pages ranked higher than me deserve to be there.
For example, Allan's site shows up for a lot of keywords that I target. In the past, I would usually rank higher but now he's beating me on most of them. Whilst I'd like to be number 1 for everything, Google has probably got this right. Allan's site is most certainly an authority - one of the most important in the internet marketing field.
There is definitely more weight on "authority" than there has been in the past. That's why sites like Amazon and news sites such as CNN and BBC tend to be ranking so well at the moment.
In regards to spam, it's still an issue that Google is struggling with. They seem intent on algorithmically removing spam. In my opinion, it's the wrong approach. Mainly because it's not working but also because spammers keep changing things. Google should go back to the old days and start banning sites again.
I'd suggest that you file a spam report to point out the problems you are seeing and keep filing them once a month. People like us who visit these forums think that "everyone" knows about SmartPages and such things but they don't. Google may not even think they are an issue because they dont rank well for competitive keywords. So, let them know.
Cheers
