it's OK if you are building a website about something that you are not passionate about or very familiar with. but the profitability factor would still have to be there. what you can do is
1 - find a profitability topic
2 - find out more about the topic
let me just share with you that i have a 3 sites in which i am not vary familiar with. but i get books, magazine, surf around to gather up content about it.
the thing about having to be passionate about a certain topic is that so you
- can leverage on your existing knowledge,
- know what to write about with less reference,
- have credit in your articles (if you are already professionally qualified),
- you like what you do,
- you last longer in the industry
- and things would seem effortless.
like what confuscious once said - find a job you love and you will never have to work for a single day for the rest of your life.
i guess for me, i am passionate about building websites and gathering content about them. _________________ Iszuddin Ismail aka Kidino

Yes, Kidino
i guess you are right for that.. there is no point that i choose somethign that i have passion and yet i didnt get to earn money, maybe it is just my luck that at this point of time, the stuffs that i like are really saturated.
so i guess some of us do not have the fortune to do things that they like. If i cannot make any money , there is no point that i continue doing.

Hi,
any of you guys has any tips of finding a profitable topic. How can you be sure that topic is profitable. FOr example, i look at dating sites, some of them really give good comission, but how profitable would that be if there are numerous websites and affiliate website on that?
It can be really tough sometimes.

how to find a profitable topic
a profitable profit eh ... i don't think that there are a sure-fire, bullet-proof methods of finding a profitable profit. for me, i just look for the topics and hope that things would turn out great.
my method would be ...
1 - look for keywords in Overture that are 1000 and above ...
2 - do the query in Google and look for results that is 500,000 and below
sometimes i find 5000 Overture and 90,000 Google ... for me this is pretty good. so then, i started to build the website, optimized, etc ...
another method that i use for PPC ...
look for keywords that are 1000 in 7Search and that no one is bidding or the highest bid is still low. this means i can afford to bid for that keyword if i want to.
again ... when i build the website, there is no guarantee that my website is going to make it. i just think that it will and hope for the best. sometimes, i target for a keyword and got good ranking for another ... _________________ Iszuddin Ismail aka Kidino

Yep, my guess is that we probably all have.
Choosing a topic is certainly not easy. For what they are worth here are a couple of my thoughts.
If you are researching a topic and Google returns 900,000 pages, don't be put off straight away. Dig around among the top results, what do you find when you get to # 40 say, is the page still on target for the phrase that you entered (especially if you did not use quotes)?
Are there enough keywords related to your topic so that it would be possible for you to have a number of high ranking pages?
Remember, you don't need to start with a burning passion, a good interest could be enough, which could be turned into a passion. And you certainly don't have to be an expert in your topic, learn as you go.
All the best,

Based on the sites many people choose out of passion (but have trouble making money from), I think the profitability (in the sense of monetising) is not stressed enough by the SBI! guide.
Passion is important (for all but the most "financially driven"), but you can end up with high traffic hobby sites frequented by "window shoppers" if you are not careful.
I think looking at the PPCs as a way of checking other people are able to make money from the phrases you are looking to optimise, at least helps show there is a market there.
Supply versus demand is an excellent way of looking at things from a traffic point of view, but there are high traffic streams that are difficult to monetise. Surprise, surprise - these are often not very competitive.
I think you are right to consider profitability seriously from the start.
Cheers,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

As suggested above, why don't you go to a Key Phrase Tool like the one in Overture.
Look for key phrases that are tied in to your area of passion that have lots of searches.
Make a shortlist of, say, 10 phrases.
Then go over to domain name whois services and see if domain names for those phrases have already been taken. If not, then go for it.
Some important search engines give importance to the "matching" between the targeted key phrases and the domain names. Who knows, you might just be able to leapfrog 900,000 other searches if you get the right combination.
Good luck!

Another thing to consider, and I am sure Allan would agree on this, since his new assistant is doing this exact thing, is check the quality of the competition.
Can you beat them? I have one site that has hundreds of competitors for the keywords... but they are not quality sites. Almost all of them are magazines and linkfarm type sites... So I decided to do that topic anyhow.
Give me two months and I think I can outrank the large majority of the competition... _________________ Eric D. Burdo
