Hi folks

I've been offered a link on a page which would be advantageous from a pagerank point of view, but perhaps less so from a potential traffic pov.

The link is made using JavaScript rather than an href link so won't pass pagerank to me.

My question - is there any reason for using JavaScript for linking, other than to prevent pagerank "leak".

Thanks

Niall

No reason at all. Javascript links aren't even viewable by about 13% of the internet population (either because of old browser usage or because the browser has js turned off).

I wouldn't link back to a site that gives such a link, as they are only trying to trick you and the SE's.

That would have been my automatic reaction, but the site is incredibly naively constructed with no other optimisation techniques used. Any tricks would seem out of place.

Thanks for the confirmation, Debs.

Now you know why they have a PR8, evidently they have a lot of links in from people who have no clue.

Hi Niall

Just email them with the information you wanted added in the noscript tags for people who can't see JS. That'll test their reasons for doing it.

Cheers

There are no noscript tags on the page. Can Google follow links in noscript tags (I know, I could go and look at your book, but this is quicker since you're online Wink )

Not a PR8, just PR enough to attract me as I try to build some PR for a new site.

Thanks

Google does use the noscript tags. In fact, it's also possible that that they can now follow JS links as long as the http://www.domain.com actually appears in full on the page. They were talking about this a while ago but I haven't had a chance to test it. Have a look at the other links and see if that page is showing as a backlink.

Cheers

I contacted the webmaster concerned, and asked him to change the javascript link. He has done, for my link only, so that could be a pagerank bonus Very Happy ...

... except that toolbar PR has suddenly disappeared from the site's internal pages. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, thanks Debs and Sean for your thoughts.
