I understand that Yahoo and others don't want to list sites that have affiliate links on them. However, do they have an algorithm to make sure it's an affiliate link before holding it against you?
What about other links? Say I have this great and pretty long article on "how to buy a cowboy hat." In the article somewhere can I put a link that's not an affiliate link, "For more about how to travel without your hat brim getting wrinkled, the Cowboy Hat Sellers of Texas have even more extensive information, click here"
I am only thinking of doing this a few times and only if the content is really good--and they might not even have an affiliate program - but they might be selling a product.
Do the spiders really know which is an affiliate link and which isn't/
First off, directories don't use spiders, search engines do. The reason it can be difficult to get into a directory is that all sites are manually reviewed, so yes, they can tell.
However, I wouldn't worry quite so much about affiliate links, just keep them within reason and on target to the content. I think the biggest problem with affiliate sites in the eyes of a directory is that over the years, so many were just a list of banners and links, no content!
