I should probably just sit back and relax, but since this is my first 'real' site I don't know what to expect.
Google spidered my home page maybe about three weeks ago. Two days ago I rejoiced to see my whole site (or at least most of it) show up in Google. Now it's gone again, except for that one home page.
I searched through some of the threads here but didn't see this type of behavior described.
Is this a "Google dance" type of thing, or did they just not like me (!)??! _________________ - blake

It happens... often times it takes a couple of months for Google ti finalize on your rankings...
Just keep building content and getting links to your site. You'll get in there... _________________ Eric D. Burdo

Now I'm wondering even worse if I should write Google and see if I did something wrong.
A site I built a couple weeks after the first one is now fully-indexed in Google, but the first one only shows the home page. It actually shows two versions, one the "www.blahblah.com" and one the "blahblah.com" type.
Will they get annoyed if I ask them if something is wrong, do you think? _________________ - blake

Ask away, but they will tell you the same thing Eric did. There are several extensive threads on this forum regarding this behavior. Try using other keywords to locate, or browse the SEO forum.

Hi Blake
Google has a bunch of data centers that are used to provide results when someone does a search. Generally, these data centers are not quite aligned with each other. Sometimes new pages found by the crawler only show up on some of them for a few days - then they tend to appear everywhere.
Also, Google will remove pages from it's index if it can't find links to them. With the way that they currently crawl and update, it can be possible for them to find a page, list it, and then remove it because they haven't re-crawled the pages that link to it.
If your home page has a high enough PR, your internal pages will get crawled and listed quickly (and it will remain stable). If your PR isn't high enough, it could take a month for your internal pages to stabilize.
Cheers

Hmmm. My site has only a few backlinks and is brand new, ergo a PR of 0. Maybe that's what happened -- they didn't find enough backlinks, so it got dropped? Thanks for the food-for-thought. It gives me something to try to improve. _________________ - blake

This is normal, don't fret. Unless you have some superb incoming links, new sites fluctuate in and out of the index for a few weeks after first appearing.
In the old days this was a result of "freshbot", but he has apparently retired. It still appears Google has some sort of "cache" of new pages that haven't yet been fully integrated into the main index. This is apparently of limited size so there is a degree of "churn".
As long as your site doesn't do anything "naughty" then it should stabilise in a month or two at most. Don't let that stop you going after quality links though! _________________ Wyrdology - For all things strange |

If you want to stabilize at a decent ranking, get those links in now!
I let backlinks go for quite a while, relying on sites picking up my articles. While I got a PR4 out of that process, I didn't get very good rankings ... mostly the >30
I've since gone about and gotten quite a few more (although not all are listed in Google yet) ... now my PR hasn't changed since I am still in the range for a PR 4 ... but boy have my rankings on Google, and a few other search engines, really improved! I'm thrilled and going to go get more links!

Good advice as always, and personally helpful since one of my least favorite things is hunting down reciprocal links.
This business is excellent for using every ounce of your "delayed gratification" skills. _________________ - blake

Well, I got a few more backlinks and perhaps coincidentally, perhaps not, I am now back in Google -- ending a VERY dark night of despair. (Might get dropped again, but this time I feel confident I'll be back).
Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions. Ah, today looks like a GOOD day ... _________________ - blake
