Yahoo spent about $235 million on Inktomi about a year ago and they've spent over a billion on Overture which included AltaVista and AllTheWeb.
People have reported that they've already seen Inktomi results on Yahoo (but I haven't). Yahoo will more than likely drop Google by the end of this month. MSN will probably drop Inktomi ASAP as well.
Yahoo will be shooting themselves in the foot a bit because whilst Inktomi's results are better than they were, they still aren't as good as Google's. I think one of the reasons that Google doesn't seem to care about losing the Yahoo contract is that they believe they'll get more traffic to their site - which means more Adwords income (Yahoo didn't show Adwords - they used Overture and others for paid listings).
I kind of agree with Jeff that MSN will surpass Yahoo for searching but it depends how good their new results are. They've been crawling for about a year so they've had lots of time to get it right.
Cheers

| Hi, Pete, I've never visited any gambling / casino sites, so I don't know if other webmasters in your niche are doing this, but what about doing a newsletter? If you keep your visitors updated with good content in their email box periodically - current news and trends in your industry plus an occasional advertisement that you can profit from - you might get a good stable of loyal visitors. |

There are two main reasons for wanting to be there.
1. Because it's a very important directory, being in Google should marginally - but not magically - help your rankings in Google. If you're in a highly competitive field, you need every little bit of help you can get, I reckon. In some cases, it could make the difference between being on page 1 or 2 of the search results in Google.
2. You can receive traffic directly from the Yahoo! directory. However, the amount of traffic you receive will depend hugely on all sorts of factors. For example, if your site is buried well down in a huge list of hundreds or even thousands of sites in a sub-category in Yahoo! you probably won't get much traffic at all. If the Yahoo! editors treat your submission kindly and don't rewrite your eye-catching Title and description too much, and if you're in a top-level category which gets a lot of traffic, then you could receive hundreds of visitors a day just from Yahoo!
I just checked Rupert's stats in Site Build It. He's averaging about 230 visitors a month to http://www.cheap-computers-guide.com from the Yahoo directory itself - not including people who go to Yahoo and use the search button. That's about 2,760 visitors a year for $299.
On the other hand, Rupert's http://www.dj-tips-and-tricks.com , which is in a very small niche, is getting only about 60 visitors a month from Yahoo's directory. That's only 720 visitors a year.
You might look at those mere 720 visitors a year and decide that paying $299 for them is jolly expensive.
However, I think there's more to consider.
According to our stats in SBI, so far this month, people have used a whopping 2,100 different phrases to find the site. Imagine if in every one of those searches, Google gave Rupert's site a tiny boost in importance because it's listed in Yahoo!? How do you calculate the worth of the investment in Yahoo! now?
If you're not confident your site will make useful money, perhaps you shouldn't risk paying $299 to Yahoo! However, if you're confident you can generate hundreds or thousands or dollars a month from it, then $299 a year to Yahoo! looks like money well spent to me.
Here's another real-life example.
We're in the early stages of launching a new site created with Site Build It! and I see it has just been listed in Yahoo! Fortunately for us, it's in a popular category which for some odd reason has only about a dozen sites in it. Already our new site has had 78 visitors from Yahoo! in less than 24 hours.
The site, which has NO other links to it yet, has also just been listed in Google. (I found it doing an advanced search.)
Your results may vary hugely from ours.
The fact that Yahoo! is switching from showing Google search results to Inktomi search results muddies the waters, but I'm confident Google will continue to treat Yahoo! as being an important directory.
