Hi People,
Im confused about link exchanging with other sites,
should i :
A) exchange links with similar themed sites?
B) Link to sites that dont link back me, and get sites to place my link when i havent placed their links on my site? A Webmaster i know said that Google doesnt like reciprocal links anymore.
C) Link with any site, ie everything from car stereos to flower baskets?
PPPlease give me some help and direction, u people have helped in the past.

You should stay on theme with your link exchanges. You can link to good authority sites straight up ... Google likes that. Also they like themed links, and links with keyphrases in the anchor text. Also, there is no problem with reciprocal links so long as:
1. You keep it to a maximum of 100 links on a page (including all links and navigation) I recommend you keep it under 50 for visitor useability.
2. You make sure you don't link to bad neighborhoods (do a search on the forum for "bad neighborhood" for more detail).
I don't know where your webmaster friend got his information, but there is no basis in fact for the assumption that Google doesn't like link exchanges. There are certain things about link exchanges that Google doesn't like ... like link farms (see bad neighborhood); more than 100 total links on a page; and links to every Tom, Dick and Harry that have no relation to your site ... sorry Tom, Dick & Harry
Whether you are just starting out, or have been around awhile, link exchanges are essential to gaining Page Rank on Google ... you simply can't get PR w/o them, you need either internal (which it appears Google is starting to discount) or external links.
Basically do some searches for relevant sites, make sure they pass the "good neighborhood" test, and that the link page has some kind of PR even if it's low. If it has no PR, it maybe because it is new, but it also could be because the siteowner has done something to prevent indexing of the page (at which point the exchange will do you no good with Google) or they have done something to upset Google (see bad neighborhood).
There are several ways you can set up link exchanges:
1. Find something interesting about the site, the email, and the owners name if you can. Do an email requesting the exchange, tell them why you like the site (the something interesting above) and why you feel it would be beneficial to exchange links.
2. Search for +"add url" +"yourkeyphrase" on Google and then start adding your url to the various sites you come across (on topic of course and in good neighborhoods) ... if a reciprocal link is needed, get it on your site ASAP so they will post your link.
When I do #2 above, I bookmark the url of the site I submitted to, and weekly check back on the site to see if my url has been added. Quite a few webmasters send emails confirming when the link is live and where it is posted. Then I go to their page, find the link to my site, and submit that page to Google. (This is in hopes of speeding up the process of Google find the link to my site.)
If the link isn't live within a week or so, I remove it.
This is just some of what you can do to get exchanges. Hope it helps,

I agree with kidino but it isn't always possible. You should definiately seek out sites that don't require a link back, as well as sites that do. You want a nice mix, in good neighborhoods, for best results.

That's why you have links coming in point to one page (or more) and links going out from a different page.
Don't limit who you link to, just so they aren't link farms and haven't been banned from Google, and won't offend your visitors. Relevancy is a little overrated I believe. While it may be better to get links from a relevant site (where is the relevancy line drawn, by the way?) it doesn't hurt to have links from non-related sites, or so most search engine results would seem to show. |

It certainly doesn't hurt to have a few links out that may be off topic, but you don't want the majority of them that way. Themed links, as in themed sites, are becoming very important to the SE's (particularly Google) and are likely to increase in importance as time goes on, IMO.
