Post subject: 2 domain names, same content

Hey all,
I currently run a 5 year old niche website which is doing pretty decent in terms of traffic. The URL of the website contains main the main theme of the website. (eg: www.how-can-widgets-help.com)
I also have another domain name (with a generic name eg - www.xyz.com)) which is being redirected to the website above. I have decided to implemented new social networking and collaboration features on www.xyz.com. Apart from many other things, one of the reasons is to grow the brand (xyz.com).
Now, can I duplicate all content from the old site and keep adding fresh content (have two different websites? Will SEs downgrade the new site because it doesn't have original content?
Or
Should I redirect all traffic from the old site to the new domain? I'm concerned I'll lose a lot of revenue earning traffic if I do this. Also, I might lost some type-in traffic if I do this.

Search your URL's compare then against each other and see which has the most links and most pagerank for the pages searched.
For argument purposes lets use Google. Google will attempt to rank the page with the most incoming links the highest and ignore the duplicate content on the other page. This is not always the case... but seems to be true.
Other search engines are not as good at weeding out duplicates.
So check your plan and use redirects carefully. If you are not ranking fine, but if you are why destroy that rank if not necessary.
It's really a practical matter.
If you use WordPress there is an excellent redirect plugin that will log 404 errors and allow you to correct and redirect them individually.
Bottom line is there is no real benefit to you having the same content on two sites if you are trying to rank it. _________________

Thanks InternetmarketingIQ. Like I mentioned earlier, the idea of moving content to a new site/domain is two-fold - branding (enabling new features, etc) and ofcourse carry over the rank that the domain presently carries.
And, I thought once I start promoting the new site, I may very well provide them content (from the old domain).
I'm still stuck however on my original question. _________________ A part-time effort to a full-time income |

How would you feel about explaining yourself to Google. I personally would not advise duplicate content on 2 websites.
Log into you Google Webmasters account and read what Google has to say about duplicate content. _________________ Visit Garage Door Opener Guide |

From my understanding, the site that had the content indexed first does not get penalized by duplicate content.
One thing I have not heard mentioned is why not just rewrite the old content so its not duplicate? _________________ Call Tracking Sofware for marketing & advertising.

I have 8 sites with exact the same content and all of them are ranked one after the other... Unless you have some money to pay for hosting and domain, I would better suggest you to retain everything..... If you want to update the content, do it only on main site.... _________________ free laptop

There is almost no point of having 2 different sites with duplicate content, most likely google will chase after the one with most links though. _________________ Affiliate Marketing explained for beginners >>
