Well, first there was the reciprocal, two-way link.
Then some people got clever and created the 3-way link.
A -> B -> C
However, A would not get a link unless C circled back
A -> B -> C -> A
But, although this does create a circle or wheel, it
was just called a 3-way link.
Then someone got more clever and expanded it to about
six links and gave it a new name "wheel".
There are slight variations, of course.
In one variation, the six sites forming the circle
ALSO link to a site "in the center", this gives it
a look of spokes for the wheel.
Does it work?
Work for what? What is it meant to do?
If all the sites are owned by YOU, this might hide
that fact, but I doubt it.
Just get as many links as possible from anywhere.
You're going to need thousands so don't be picky.

Linkwheels is not so much about getting more traffic as it is about ranking high. It will improve your seo ranking as long as you choose your LSI keywords well for the different wheels.
It;s more popular now with PPC landing pages as it gets you pages indexed and it also picks up on LSI keywords which is important for getting a high QS in Adwords.
From my experience it is slightly over rated as a traffic source and also as ranking tool. Works awesome for Adwords landing pages though.

As far as link wheels go, the more ordered and planned it looks, the easier it is for Google to pickup that you're trying to game the system.
As opposed to linking from A-B-C-A we use a random linking structure in our link wheels, so we have A-C-B-A etc. but with a link wheel with 116 different properties.
There are other best practices you can follow to avoid getting the posts deleted or discounted. When using Web 2.0 sites, you need to make sure that the posts are not nofollow, which can be difficult to do if you're doing a single link wheel, but if you're doing 10+ link wheels per day, you can see how useful it can be to contract with a link wheel company that audits their Web 2.0 sites and makes sure they're still providing link juice, the posts are being deleted, etc.

The web link wheel app lets you visit a different web link every time you touch the reader with the same tag. After the last link, the first one is used again, etc.
So the first time you touch the reader your web mail in box might show, next your face book page, next your intranet homepage... and so on.

Link wheel works like this..
Imagine that there are three sites. The 1st one gives its own link to the 2nd one, the 2nd one gives its own link to the 3rd one, and the 3rd one gives its own link to the 1st one. So, we recieve a circle, or a wheel.
But as far as I know Google doesn't like such a wheel anymore and Google easily calculates the sites which have chosen to promote themselves with the help of such link wheels.

Link wheel helps to generate lot traffic. It is basically article submission. Each article contains two links one link points to another article and one link points to your site and last article is linked with first article.

As it is stated above, link wheel is more on ranking than generating traffic for your website. The concept is to create a network of websites that are going to link to your main website thus creating a lot of targeted links to your money site.

Link wheel can be used to gain back links from squidoo, blogger, hub pages etc to your website and help improving search engine ranking. This is how link wheel works: Suppose you have 6 articles site then you can allow each article to link to your main site and another to one of the 6 article site. It forms a circular motion with a complete link.

Link wheels is organized groups of articles, blogs, etc. linked to each other and the main site, then built links to blogs and profile sites. In other words, you can say that the link wheel is just a wheel in the ranking of your site that may be at the intersection of all the articles and press releases and blogs link to the site, and all these blogs and article and pressure release are related.
