For blogs with low traffic, I find that another method works better.
No 125x125 banners at all.
Some AdSense, yes, and then choose one affiliate product at a time and write an entire blog post about it.
Inside the post, it works wonders to have a picture of the product, whether it's a virtual one (most vendors offer a virtual book cover, cd-cover etc.), or a physical product.

All depends on the nature product and industry. If you are working for travel and retail banners work effectively. So all you need check out what other bloggers are doing if they are using banners you can try that or if they are using text links then try the same pattern on your blog as well.

You can use both Banner and text-links. As some people don't like banner so I support of using text-links.But you need advanced expertness in this way otherwise you will fail to make profit.
