From my understanding SEM is when you pay a search engine money to advertise your site when a visitor searches for a keyword related to your site. Normally ads appear at the top and right-hand side of search engine results page (SERP). You only pay when a visitor clicks on your ad to visit your site.
SEO on the other hand is when you optimize your website with meta tags (keywords, page title, description etc.) where search engines crawl your site to be included in their database. When a visitor searches with a keyword related to your site it appears in the organic search results section normally below the sponsored ad section.

sem is more for using search engines to make money off products your selling.
seo is more for driving traffic from search engines.

SEO includes your organic search engine ranking not with the traffic. Includes on page optimization, off page optimization, competitor analysis....... etc
SEM is only related to traffic either paid or free like Yahoo, Google and MSN. It is a form of paid advertising which can guarantee you prominent ranking on the search engine results.

SEM is not necessarily paid inclusion. It can encompass a lot of marketing tactics online that are either free (forum posting, blogs, social networks) or paid (PPC).

Hello,
In SEM, we use to promote our website, in promotion we use press release, video marketing, commenting and many more.
In SEO, there are two types on-page optimization and off-page optimization. Both are important when one brings traffic and second one is for pure optimization, respectively.
