I'm looking to get a new hosting company and I was wondering if there is a distinct advantage of going with a reseller acct over a shared plan, other than cost? I realize that a reseller acct allows you to host each domain on its own acct instead of having to use an addon domain with the shared plans, but is there an advantage to this? Thanks for the help.

Well, the advantage is that you can host many sites for a fixed price. Some reseller accounts limit the number of domains you can host, other limit only the bandwidth and traffic.
In any case, if you have more than 2-3 sites I would choose reseller package

Terry,

Just to give a little more to what mbongwe mentioned.

When looking at a shared account..You can find some providers that will offer the ability to host multiple domains.

one that comes to mind is: hostgator.com they provide the ability to host multiple domains on one shared account (prob. about $10 bucks a mth I believe).

Now a disadvantage to this is that all of your domains are "add on" domains. They redirect to sub domain folders, and aren't as easy to move around etc.

Now a re-seller plan, allows you to setup your own shared accounts. Some as mentioned are unlimited, some are limited to a number of domains. They're still on the same IP address, and potentially still on the same server as multiple shared hosting accounts that other people have but it gives you a lot more control over you websites. Espeically if you're using any form of CMS (content management system).

I'd reccommend getting a re-seller plan. A couple that come to mind to check out are.

hostgator.com
resellerzoom.com

Good luck,

Ian

Thanks Ian and mbongwe. I appreciate the explanation. I'm definitely going with the reseller acct.

Some companies offer more resources (space, bandwidths)with shared packages. Thus you'll be able to store more data with your account. But with reseller packages you can host domains no as add-ons but as a separate domains with separate control panels.

May be somebody knows the hosting providers that offer shared hosting packages with control panels for each full domain name (in order not to have them as add-ons)?

Depends on how big your sites are.
I am using shared hosting from hostgator for 6-7 blogs, but they are new and small..so I don`t have any problem

If you are looking to resell your hosting package and want to make money then reseller is best option; on shared hosting you have limited access and you may face some security issues.
