I have done alot of research on SEO and come across the term link building but do not quite fully understand what is ment by it, or better yet how to accomplish it.

So it is the same as back links. Should these all point to a home page or should they be spread out to different pages across my site?

Link Building is the "Back Links" you create yourself or pay someone to create for you.
The question you have to ask yourself is does this link make sense to go to the home page or should it go to a specific product page?
When a person who finds your site decides to link to it on there own what page would they link to?
If I had a blog about Skate Boarding and I found a really cool article about a particular brand, then I found your commerce site I'd probably link directly to the product page.
If I was writing an article on a place where professionals buy their skate boarding supplies and I just wanted to recommend that site with a link I'd probably link to the home page.
The point being you want "natural" links, which by definition are impossible for you to create on your own.
It's not natural for every link you make to go to the home page nor is it natural for every link to contain the exact same keyword phrase. People don't do that.
Look at any search in Google Adwords Keyword tool and you'll find a dozen or so phrases that are very related but just slightly different.
If you can figure out a way to pull this all together in a way that Google rewards you win.
Thus is the linking game... trying to figure out what Google wants and giving it to them!

As per my thoughts are concerns Link Building is such a process in which we are trying to get backlinks in such a manner that it can give more traffic and a good page rang to our regarding domain,by this way we are promoting the regarding product of the site..

this is true. However, you can use inside pages of your site to get a higher rank based on keywords that naturally exist on that page. I think this is an important thing that people are not paying attention to...
