Whether or not moderators are paid varies from forum to forum.
Many Internet forums use volunteer moderators. The only "payment" they receive is free publicity for them and their website.
A moderator's main tasks are making sure that the forum guidelines or instructions are followed, and banning forum users who keep ignoring the guidelines.
They may send private messages to new forum users pointing out which guidelines they've ignored.
Our moderator since 1998, Wally, is paid. He usually logs in several times a day, 7 days a week, mainly to look for blatant spam and delete it.
It's quite a balancing act. A moderator needs to be friendly and welcoming to forum members, while scaring away selfish spammers who abuse the system. _________________ Allan Gardyne
