Post subject: A stupid question Affiliate Marketing software

A company I work for is looking in to Affiliate Marketing and I have been asked to do some research after getting a basic understanding I have decided asking on a forum will be more likely to give me the answers to the questions I have
1) how does Affiliate Marketing Software work? Would I need to embed code in my web pages put some files on my webserver?
2)what's the best (in your opinion)software to use
3) what things should I know about Affiliate Marketing?
4) if we offered say 20% commission on what ever sells would that be acceptable?

Offcourse you need to put affiliate script files in to your server, also you need to create page where your affiliates will register.
Best software to use is always self made, becouse you know whats there and you can rewrite it for security.
Affiliate marketing is longterm partnership with other people, you need to inform them how your program works, what you offer and what benefits are.
20% comission depends from what product you sell, this comission should be good for some cheaper products.

Hmm. The only types of affilaite marketing software I can think of have to do with article submitters, social bookmarking submitters, RSS submitters, link cloakers, PDF rebranders.
Individuals are selling these on the internet already.
