Post subject: affiliate site for a country?

would it be harder to be successful if i wrote a blog / create a site around a country? for example: syria
would this be worse than writing about an actual top or product? |

Maybe. Maybe not.
Look at things from your visitors' point of view.
If you chose Syria as your topic, what would you be selling? Who would your customers be? How strong is your potential competition?
So the answer is... It all depends.
The big questions are: Can you provide what your visitors' want?
More than a million people a month are searching for information on Syria, so there's huge potential - as long as most of them aren't just kids working on a school project.
A fair percentage of them are going to be planning vacations.
You could do quick preliminary research by using the Google AdWords Keyword Tool to see what people are searching for.
Whether you choose a topic or a product, if you want good sales, you won't merely write about a topic. Your job as an affiliate is still to help people decide what to buy. _________________ Allan Gardyne

im familiar with these tools. i've registered a keyword rich domain name as well.
it looks as if though many people are searching for vacations, airplane tickets, and other travel things.
now if i just write about a specific country using lots of keywords, good links, and get good traffic...i suppose i could use in-text affiliate links that go to travel sites etc..
is that pretty much what i need to do? |

That should work, especially if you write content with your visitors in mind, providing useful information they're looking for.
You can also use AdSense as well as affiliate programs. It's often easier to make money with AdSense, if you have keyword-rich pages.
Have a good look at what your potential competitors are doing. Type some of those keywords you've found into Google, Bing and Yahoo! and study the sites you find. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Very interesting. Thanks for your help.
I'd love to continue doing this until I make enough money not to have a 9-5 anymore. |

It can be done.
It's a fantastic feeling when you walk into your boss's office, and say, "I don't need your job any more."
Keep that in mind every day. It will inspire you. Worked for me. _________________ Allan Gardyne
