SEO and SMO both are the part of SEM (Search Engine Marketing).
Now SEO is an organic method to increase visitors to your website. This method includes on-page, off-page optimization and PPC (Pay Per Click)
Social media includes activities such as blogging, book marking, tagging, RSS feeds and Video and Photo sharing. It is basically a viral marketing technique used on social networking websites. The biggest advantage of SMO (Social Media Optimization) is you can expect traffic quickly in comparison to SEO.
SMO tactics can drive huge amounts of people to a website and can also determine whether a startup, website or idea will make it or not. It involves driving traffic to a website through new channels because search engines aren't the only sites that drive big traffic anymore. While it's not taking over SEO yet, it has the potential to someday soon.

It's a part of SEO. A set of methods for generating publicity through social media, online communities and community websites. Methods of SMO include adding RSS feeds, social news buttons, blogging, and incorporating third-party community functionalities like images and videos.
SEO :- SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a process of improving the volume and quality of traffic of a website on search engines via organic or natural search results.

SMO means Social Media Optimization. In these type of techniques the interaction with the people get in touch socially with each others through the means of Communities, Forums, and others such kind of social panels. Some of the famous panels are Facebook, Twitter, Flicker, Linkedin and many more.
SEO means Search Engine Optimization. This technique is used to make and promote website prominent and famous in search engines. Its an off page optimization and contains no social interaction and do use traditional techniques and some new as well.
