Post subject: Make money without a website?
|

Hi there,
Is it true that one can make money using only blogs, squidoo and other free social networking sites without making a website? Is there really a difference on the volume of traffic one can attract from a paid website vs. a free blog? |

Yes, it is true that it's possible to make money from affiliate programs using free methods. If you're totally broke or in debt and want to dip your toe in affiliate marketing waters, this is one way to start. It's tough, but it can be done if you're determined enough.
However, I strongly recommend that as soon as you possibly can, get your own memorable domain name and your own website.
The huge disadvantage of using totally free methods is that you're building someone else's business instead of your own.
A disadvantage of a free Blogger blog or any other free blog is that many of your visitors KNOW that you're using a free blog. There's hardly anything more ridiculous than a newbie marketer telling people on his blog how to make a fortune online - and he's doing so on a free blog! What? He's a success but he can't afford a paid service? Your credibility is SO important when you're trying to sell something.
However, in some non-marketing niches you CAN get away with using a free blog because your audience won't care, as long as your content is excellent. I have an old 1996 site on which I look like a friendly amateur, not a marketer, and the site generates hundreds of dollars a month. It can be done.
Another disadvantage of using free services is that they can suddenly disappear. For examples, many affiliates have been horrified to discover that the free URL redirecting service they've been using for months has suddenly disappeared, making all their affiliate links faulty.
Here's another example... many thousands of people have built free websites using GeoCities and have now been told than GeoCities is closing. They either have to abandon their site or switch to a paid host. They're lucky they've been warned. Sometimes free hosts just close without any warning at all. Not only do they lose their site, they lose all the links they've worked hard to attract. Been there, done that, years ago. Make sure you always have backups!
You take an unnecessary risk when you use free services.
When you have your own domain name and website you're building an asset that not only keeps working for you 24/7, it becomes a valuable asset you sell one day if you wish. If you have enough of them, you create your own little online empire. Keep the bookkeeping separate so that any one asset is easy to sell.
One HUGE advantage of having a memorable website combined with a newsletter and/or autoresponder series is that you can get heaps of REPEAT traffic. People remember your site and type its name directly into their web browser.
Repeat traffic is extremely unlikely to happen when you do things totally free, because free sites and free blogs typically have URLs that are almost impossible to remember. This is hugely important. Don't waste months or years building something amateurish and then regret it. Been there, done that, years ago.
I have some experience in all this because when I started online in 1996 I was broke and in debt, working only part-time and I did everything I possibly could free, including using a free web host. It's hard work. Don't try it unless you really have to. At the very least, sell something and scrape up about $10 for a domain name and a few bucks for monthly hosting. In the long run, you'll be glad you built an asset instead of built someone else's business.
Don't be scared of the learning or the work involved in building your own site, building your own reputation, building your own business. Just take it one step at a time. You'll be glad you did. _________________ Allan Gardyne

You're welcome.
Here's something else to consider... You've now made 55 posts on this forum using the username "Informer".
That would be handy if your website was called Informer.com - you'd be doing a nice little bit of branding.
You could have made 55 posts all signed by your real name or the name of a website and you would have made a good start on building a reputation online.
You don't HAVE to brand your own name, but I reckon you should be branding something. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Doing affiliate marketing using free sites can also give great results. There are lots of success stories using squidoo, blogger, and hubpages. Having these sites to go on and make money is possible.
On the other hand, you can also have your own domain in the future, as it is also a great one to have specially if you have wordpress installed as it contains lots of features and a massive number of plugins.
With your writing skills and patience, you can always go on winning. _________________ RUSH Delivery Within 24-48 Hours!

Affiliate Marketing is a way for a company to sell its products by signing up individuals or companies who market the company's products for a commission. Affiliate programs are somewhat risk free. Some people will try to sell the model as entirely risk free, but of course, there are some fixed costs involved. While affiliate marketing is more fiscally effective than a lot of other methods, it's not without risk. _________________ hydraulic valve || seo packages |

Informer,
Shall I suggest that you don't wait until you earn enough money? And let me tell you why:
1) Getting your own site does not require big money: You can register your domain for less than $10 a year and hosting for less than $20 a month (my host service includes an autoresponder service that's proven completely reliable);
2) Investing in your business will make you accountable for your efforts (I myself am rather stingy, so the money I put into this spurs me to get something out of it!).
