I have a hard time getting through my thick brain that google would single out and target affiliate links. They may tweak their algo for terms or revise affiliate links in their adsense program but "disallow affiliate links" on search results.
What exactly does that mean?
Does microsoft have affiliate links on their pages?
What is an affiliate link?
Any link to something sold?
I dare to say we could probably get rid of about 50% of the pages out there. That's just a number I pulled from the sky... don't quote me on that.
If they see a problem with the search results I think tweaking the algo is their business but to target affiliates seems a little too narrow minded. Who knows maybe it's just my thick brain holding me back.
Sorry... I have to go. I did a search on computers and came up with a scientic paper on chip design that I need to read because it has no affiliate links _________________ Gary

I think that article was confusing in the least, as I mentioned...
I wasn't there, but I find it very hard to believe that this represents what speakers meant to say. The biggest confusion seems to arise from the way "optimizing" and PPC were used in close proximity.
As you point out, Adwords/Adsense is one thing, but free listings - no way. Until you hear the SEOs whingeing about it, I should dismiss it as a mix up.
Just my opinion,

Charlie,
I have to agree on the confusing part. The problem is that if you take the statement as written people start jumping to conclusions and "panic" sets in.
Sorry, I read a few months ago that the interent was dead... I'm glad I didn't listen to them. _________________ Gary

I was reading an article about the Google algo and Hilltop recently...
Analysis of Hilltop Algorithm
...and it suddenly struck me that certain SEOs at least seem to use the term "affiliate site" to mean a site closely linked to the main site in terms of IP or web server. (See the articles for the detailed definition.)
Most people who work with affiliate programs tend to think of affiliate sites as something quite different.
I am guessing that these two different interpretations of affiliate site may have been confused at the conference or by the journalists later.
Just a thought,

Charlie,
Excellent point... Sometimes we are so close to our industry we forget other people use the same terms meaning something different.
Sort of like kids saying ---- "that's bad" is it or is it really good? _________________ Gary
