There are several seo plugins listed for wordpress. I downloaded All in one SEO plugin. It seems it takes some configuration and I'm not understanding all it is talking about. I have not installed it.

Could you please recommend an SEO plugin to benefit the SEO of my blog without all the configuring and backups.

All in One SEO Plug in is the one I use. It's terrific.

You do need to configure it for maximum effectiveness. But you can actually just use most of the default settings and get very good results as well. I don't always use it for every post, in fact on some sites I only set up the homepage and let it work it's magic with the default settings, then I focus on Article Titles, Keywords, and content.

Install it, and take a few minutes to set it up. It is well worth your time.

In my opinion you won't find a better SEO plugin for free.

I use a lot of plugins and the way you find out if they work is you try them.

With 2.8 million downloads... obviously this one is a winner!

over59,
There are only three fields in All in One SEO Pack that are essential to the configuration and you decide what to put in them: Home Title, Home Description and Home Keywords.
For the title, you have one for your blog, I assume, just make sure the keywords you're interested in are included.
For the description, write a short paragraph (150 characters or less, including the spaces) that tells what your blog or site is about.
For the keywords, just list them, separated by commas. Don't use more than five, let's say, and three would be better.
Then enable the plugin. As InternetMarketingIQ said, it's terrific.

My top 3 Wordpress plugins for SEO is...

1. All in One SEO - must have for on-site SEO

2. Google XML Sitemaps - must have for automatically generating sitemaps and notifying the search engines every time it updates

3. ZGoogle Analytics - must have to see where your traffic comes from and how people behave on your site

I also use All in One SEO, but remember to take steps to change the titles.

Andrew Hansen writes that this little tweak boosted his rankings: http://andrewhansen.name/seo/this-all-in-one-seo-tweak-boosted-my-rankings/

Because of Google searching for duplicate content on the same site, you should avoid reusing the same words again and again in the titles, like adding the name of your blog to each title.

But read Andrew Hansen. I'm a big fan of him, and he explains this so much better than I do.

Good link Britt. I have followed Jerry West since the original StomperNet days.

I wonder at what point it is suggested to remove the blog title from the title? The name on the blog I plan to try this on is quite short and usually the post name is far longer then the added on title.

The thing i really like about the all in one seo is the ability to make custom title, keyword and desc tags for every page and post. The universal settings are great but I like the custom page meta option.

I don't think the length of the blog name matters, more the number of blog posts you have.

"Britt's Blog - How to bla bla bla" and "Britt's Blog - How not to bla bla bla", would probably be okay, but if you count on doing thousands of pages, it would be redundant.

But an interesting question, in fact, because this goes for article writing, too. At the moment, I'm in a series of "Money Making Ideas" articles, and the ones I submit to Ezine Articles all start with these three words. When is it too much? I've written 50 now - time to stop? Or is 1,000 the limit?

True enough Britt. Right now the one site is fairly small but is growing daily.

As Allan would keenly say "do a test and see".

One I have not seen mentioned is SEO Post Link, it is a good plugin that will make your post links smaller and more SEO friendly by taking out unnecessary words within your slug.

This is because you are hosting on the Wordpress platform.
They really limit you on what you can do. In order to get the maximum benefit you really should host your blog on your own hosting account.

I agree with earnnetwealth in this matter.

You can get very cheap domains. I'm told that at Godaddy you can get info domains for around one dollar (haven't checked - I'm using another registrar), and you can host your blog for free at Dreamhost (which might be why their service to paying webmasters went down).
