Is there a general guideline as to how many meta tag keywords I should use for my website to be optimized for google?

5? 50? 500?

Does the order of the keywords matter?

In other words, does the number of keywords lower the "strength" of individual keywords (ie. is keyword 'cool stuff' more effective if it is with 5 other keywords, as opposed to 50 other keywords?)

Thanks guys!
-Serge

Serge, I don't think meta tag keywords are of great importance when optimizing for google. You want to concentrate on page title, headers and content

Hi Niche,

Thanks for the tip.

I'm guessing it's still in my best interest to add in meta tag keywords.

Does anyone have a general guideline as to the number of keywords to use?

Thanks,
-Serge

Great tip. I agree with you that Google do not pay attention to keywords tag. However some other search engine do.

If the major search engines are not using them then why would it matter?

Pick a handful and move on to something more useful.

The more you stuff on to your pages the longer it makes the text the bots have to read before they get to your real content.

There is simply no practical use for Meta Keywords by the Seach Engines that matter. It was a nice idea that was quickly exploited.

Focus on your Title Tags and you Description Tags. The two tags that are displayed in Search Results.

I stopped using Meta Keywords a very long time ago.

It is a good advice to concentrate on Tile and Descripion tages. Good title and description will do your page a lot of good

While I would agree that meta tags aren't a big deal, I think they hold some importance. Pick some good keywords, set them as your meta tags and then make sure you do everything else to optimize that page for those keywords. Even if Google doesn't give any weight to that, you have used them to help you make a cohesive SEO strategy for that page. I would say go with 5 or so and then do what everyone else said about title, h1 and description tags etc.

Meta keyword tags carry no value in terms of search engine ranking.

The only reason to include them is because it's a 'give' and is considered good practice. Use just your main keyword with one or two variations.

As for H1 and Description tags - they are much more important and you need to get your keywords in there as well.

On-page SEO is very basic - Google knows how easy it is to manipulate it. The key thing is to keep is 'organic' and natural and not to force keywords and tags.

Meta tags have never been a guaranteed way to gain a top ranking on crawler-based search engines.

I don't say META tags are not worthy but don't be too lengthy. Try online meta tag generators.
