Thanks for the promotion Allan, appreciate it! I've never been a Sticky before.
Ok, now I feel some responsibility not to wander way off topic, as I often do.
Having our passions, and our profits too. Isn't that what working online is all about?
One of the mistakes I've made many times, and seen many others make as well, is focusing on the profits too much, and giving the passion part only lip service, if that.
The problem with this approach is that if we're not sincerely passionate about our topic, we're unlikely to become a recognized and respected authority on our topic. Without that, we have no brand.
This seriously limits our profit potential.
Why are you here reading this site? Because Allan is a well known authority, he's established his brand. And he has the beach houses to prove it.
I've done many things in 14 years online. Too many. Way too many.
So many, that I'm not known for anything in particular. Jack of all trades, master of none. Why should you come to me for info on something, when real masters are only a click or two away?
I find myself in this situation because I've not had the courage and vision to marry the topic that interests me most, and commit to it, til death do us part, for better and for worse.
If you choose to follow this thread (now an official Sticky!) you'll find out whether I succeed in reversing all my years of clever mistakes, and find a way to have my passion, and my profits too.
In other news, I'm now 11% of the way to catching up with Allan's backlink count. _________________ Nature-Search.com

This is sermon that I read all the way through and enjoyed every line of it.
I love it when individuals in affiliate marketing sell the "dream" with "real" numbers. Millions, billions and trillions is all fine and good but......
what about $5 a day? What about $100 a week? What about $2000 a month? You know, numbers you can wrap your hands around, learn the business, build, and then grow it out.
Good post. _________________ Freedom is not knowing your limits but realizing you have none.

Thanks for your kind words, glad you are enjoying the thread. Thanks also for reminding me to provide an update.
CONTENT: I'm up to about 250+ pages, and find that the more I learn about my topic, the more interested I am in it. Building the passion is working.
I've found a news service that daily sends me links to relevant articles I can review, and use as article inspirations. http://www.newsvine.com/
A very broad topic, combined with a sincere and growing interest, plus a news service feeding me ideas, means I can create 20 pages a day for decades to come and never run out of things to write about. Happy about that.
LINKS: I'm up to 6800 incoming links to the site, 2/3 of my original goal of 10,000 in a year. That's good, but the links are less relevant than is ideal.
As described above, I gave up on forum and blog posting, and created a word of mouth / viral link building tool instead. http://link-to-tool.com
The result has been more links, but less relevant links than originally planned. A mixed result. I'm not complaining, it's much better than my usual pathetic link building efforts.
TRAFFIC: Up to around 100 visitors a day, 2 to 3 times that many page views.
I've been pleased to see many of my pages are showing up in page 1 or 2 of the search engine results. These aren't highly competitive or profitable niches, but the rankings are bringing in the traffic I want.
I attribute the modest ranking success to two things.
1) Taking link building seriously (finally!)
2) Careful thought given to the site structure. See the MasterPlan by Charles Heflin for details.
All that said, have a long long way to go yet. I estimate I need something like 20,000 page views a day to reach basic income goals.
This is where the importance of the "passion" part is revealed.
I'm on a good track, doing the right things, seeing modest beginners success. But I need to do A LOT more of what's already been done.
The key to success will be sticking with the project, and for me, my sincere interest in the topic will be the key to sticking with it.
INCOME: Nothing worth talking about yet, haven't really been working on this. This is probably my chief concern. My topic isn't a highly profitable niche, and selling stuff is not my chief talent.
If you are contemplating building your business on your passion, it's wise to be really clear with yourself about whether you are willing to marry your passion, for better or for worse, until death do you part.
I was able to do this, mostly because I realized I'm simply not capable of sticking with sites I'm not passionate about over the long term. Your situation may be different of course.
PLANS:
There are a lot of nature sites out there. How can I distinguish myself? Not totally sure yet.
I do have a system set up and ready to go that can provide free (ad supported) site, newsletter and forum hosting to other nature publishers. This would make me more of a portal, than just a typical nature site. As best I can tell, no other nature site on earth offers this.
I'm pausing before launching this though. Don't really have the traffic to make it work yet, and still pondering the details. We'll see what happens there.
Hope something in here is useful to readers.
You won't find any quick tips to instant riches here, sorry.
But if you want to watch somebody build a career that feels more like fun than a job, stay tuned, subscribe to the thread. If I can do it, you can too. If you keep reading, you'll find out whether I can do it. _________________ Nature-Search.com

A lot of wisdom lies here for those who can spot sticky, good and useful content. I know from experience that content not even close to content at this post is bundled up and sold at 47 and 97. With a simple site and using advice of allan gardyne, I have started seeing some dollars trickling in. Thanks. _________________ A Savvy Webmaster determined to extend selfless help others and share. Very nice blog post Allen! Sometimes you can't totally find that niche that you are pasioned about and be profitable too. But I say that if you can make it happen it sure will turn your work into play rather quickly. This same concept is the 10x Method the Rhodes Broters talk about. If you can make a little bit of profit, try to turn around and work it 10x if you can and make 10x the profits. Great post

I agree.
As a career life coach I totally believe in doing what you are passionate about, but when it comes to niche marketing it's a very good idea to have a high interest product that is fairly low competition.
I have a genealogy business because this is one of the things I love doing most. It's a very popular subject - but there are still lots of other genealogists who do not have websites...

Greetings all, I hope your projects are going great. Here's an
update from here.
As a quick recap, you'll recall this thread is about "Having
Our Passions, and Profits Too."
My niche is nature, a fairly low profit topic that I'm very
passionate about. Because my niche is generally low profit,
I need lots and lots of content, links and traffic to make
a living at it.
I've seen I'm going to need help to create the quantity of
content I need, and thus have spent the summer upgrading my
set up from an single author Web 1.0 style site, to a Web
2.0 community based operation.
If you're not fully clear what these concepts mean, here's a
seven part article series which explores the subject of Web
2.0 in plain English. (No ads and nothing for sale at that
domain)
In a nutshell, Web 1.0 generally refers to a site built by
one person or company, whereas Web 2.0 refers to a site
whose purpose is to create and serve a community.
As example, this forum is a Web 2.0 environment, where
great numbers of posts have been created by thousands of
different people.
If I want to succeed in a low profit niche, that's what I
need, thousands of pages of content, created by a community
of quality people who share my passion.
And so, I'm about to launch a site that is all about
providing free services to my competitors.
Huh? Yes, you read that right.
I want the best publishers in my niche to help me build my
online nature empire, and the only way to interest them in
that project is to help them build their online nature
empires too. That is, I'm going Web 2.0.
Rather than describe this new site, I'll refer you to
my signature below. If you're interested you can
explore the site to see how I'm trying to implement
the concepts discussed above.
Please understand this site has been public only 24 hours,
so it has a long, long, long (LONG!) way to go yet. But the
basic structure is there, so you can see where I'm headed.
The relevant question is...
Can you create all the content you need by yourself?
If your passion has led you to a low profit niche, the
answer is probably no.
If you find yourself in that position, and haven't done it
already, perhaps now is the time to start planning your own
Web 2.0 community site.
Best of luck!
I'll keep you posted as I proceed through the many challenges that will be involved in this effort. _________________ Nature-Search.com

Hi Phil, Good to hear from you again.
Do you have a few friends lined up to provide some of the Web 2.0 content, to give things an initial boost? _________________ Allan Gardyne

Great question, as always.
Yes, you've put your finger on the next challenge of course.
I'm a lot better at Web 2.0 theory and technology, than I am Web 2.0 marketing, so we'll see what happens. Here are my plans for now.
Step 1) Finish up all the little technical tweaks, make sure everything works.
Step 2) The number one thing I need to be able to offer members is audience, and traffic to their sites. So Job #1 is to get some traffic rolling.
I plan to do this by the usual method. Content and links, content and links, content and links. To get the ball rolling, I can do this myself. Got 400 pages on the site this weekend, working on links now.
Step 3) To answer your question...
Once I have some decent traffic to talk about, I'll start contacting other nature webmasters, and offering to showcase their work on my site.
In the beginning I'm probably going to have to do most of the work myself.
Everybody likes free advertising, but until I can wave real traffic under their noses, many people won't want to do the work involved.
So I'll have to get their permission, and then upload their photos and videos in to their accounts etc.
Sounds like a lot of work, and it is, but it's easier than creating all this content myself.
Step 4) Sooner or later I'll have enough content and links that I'll have traffic worth bragging about.
I'll document the traffic some how to prove it, and start bragging.
At this point all the work will start paying off, and folks will be coming to me, instead of me chasing them.
If I can get to this point, I'll have a site that largely builds itself. I won't have to create content anymore, unless I want to.
It seems like the key to making all this work is having something that other folks want. I've put all my technology on the table, but I doubt that will be enough by itself.
I'm going to have to roll up my sleeves and get the traffic ball flowing by the usual Web 1.0 methods, until the site makes the leap to Web 2.0.
Haven't done that before, so advice is always welcome, I'm sure I'll need it. _________________ Nature-Search.com

It reminds me of when I started learning to play guitar
There are parts of playing guitar which i enjoyed and parts i didnt like but i had to learn them to one day appreciate the areas of guitar that i liked hearing on albums
I combine both, what i love and what i may not and in doing so see broader results _________________ The Affiliate Entrepreneur - Over 560 Pages, additional videos and custom bonuses ( 3 Live Examples!)

Hi there, People say that niche selection is important , selection should be based not on the amount of money it will pay but rather how passionate you are about because it means you can promote it much better and turn it into sale.
