I've been considering whether to put a forum on my site but now I don’t know whether to or not. Is a blog the same as a forum or are there differences?

What's the point in adding either?

You're not ready to do either until you know how it helps your customer.

Blogs you write and users contribute comments.
Forums you create and users contribute content.

But in either case they need a purpose and you need to be able to attract users/readers/customers.

Really depends on what you are willing to do and what purpose it will serve
If you are willing to write posts every now and then and are looking to attract readers to your site then blogging is an option

If you want mainly user generated content and are prepared to invest the time to moderate things, then a forum may help

One huge difference is that on a forum the visitor can start a new topic, just as you started a new topic here.

Forums are designed for lengthy conversations among lots of people. Blogs are designed for articles to which visitors can add brief comments.

On forums, visitors are likely to feel more in control. On blogs, the owner of the blog is usually very definitely in control.

You can start a blog with zero traffic and it will look OK. If you have zero traffic and start a forum, your forum will look really awful because you'll have a whole lot of topics in which nothing is happening.

Most visitors to forums don't post messages - they just read the posts. So you usually need good traffic - say 1,000 or 2,000 a day - before you start a forum. If you're highly talented and innovative, you can start with less.

As niche has suggested, the really important questions are, what do you want to spend your time doing, and what do you hope to get out of it.

Both blogs and forums can be big time-suckers. Both can attract spammers and need constant attention.

If your forum gets busy, you may need to hire a moderator or find volunteer moderators who moderate in return for free publicity.

Forum Posting and Blog Commenting
By posting regularly to these forums and blogs, and properly utilizing the signature tags, you can generate much needed back links to your web page which helps with search engine optimization for your site.

Judging by the description in the hyperlink of your sig, a blog would be more suitable. But unfortunately the hyperlink could not take me to your site...

A blog has a much easier format for people to interact than the forum. Provided you take the adequate precautions, keeping it safe from spammers is a relatively easy task.

I would choose a blog. Forum, as already said is much more work. Forum should represent something the people want to discuss. A lot of people. Nothing looks so ugly as a forum with 10 subforums a 2-3 threads in each with 0-1-2 posts. Blog wins for sure for me.

If you are just starting out, I would NOT add a forum to your site. If you want to have a successful forum there needs to be a community of other people that want to participate there. If you're starting out you just don't have that yet.

I WOULD install a blog though. Start posting really good content and marketing it and you will find readers and start building an audience. It can be a great source of traffic and return visits, as well as a good trust builder.
