Hi,

I have webspace with 1&1 - generally quite happy, although I don't do anything complicated with it - just lots of html sites.

I have one main site, and then several other sites which have been created to drive traffic to the main site (and make the main site more important by linking to it.)

Is it likely that Google et al will notice that all of the sites are on the same host (they all have similar or identical IP addresses) and therefore devalue the cross links in some way? Has anybody experience of this?

If necessary, I could take up 3 or 4 different hosting plans with seperate companies - this might make the various sites seem more seperate, and therefore the links between them might be more valuable.

Any ideas?

Thanks

The answer to your question is yes. Excessive cross linking from sites on the same IP Block will not be rewarded. Penalize? Who really knows.

Google is smart enough to figure these things out. As a registrar they can easily compare who owns what domains.

Should you still do it? Yes, but only if it makes sense to send your visitors from one site to the other. Otherwise there is little point in cross linking. You won't be rewarded and might incur a penalty.

There is of course no penalty for just hosting your sites on the same IP Block.

Well, that techniques aren't new. As many people as done it. Register several domains, offer the same contents and hope to get more traffic from the search engines.

Google already devalue this kind of links. so I would say building links in the usual way, write articles and submit to articles directories, directories submission, set up a blog using blogger, xanga, squidoo etc and get a link there. They are better way than just create a door way page/site.
