www.w3.org is the place to go. They will step you right through HTML, inot css and beyond....

Work at your own pace, it's all right there, from the people who bring you the web as we know it.

Actually, here is the address for the do-it-yourself learning processes -

http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

And for the laugh of the day don't miss this web nerd humor -

Customer: "I want to download the Internet. Do I need a bigger hard disk?"

Download the Internet here!

Good going! You might want to download the internet someday. LOL Since html is the language of the internet, learning it is a win/win. I only know a smidgen, and even that is invaluable.

The w3school mentioned in the quote is a must and fun to use, I think. Good advice in that post.

I started with KomPozer (free download from SourceForge), and it was a great launch point. When you type into the editor (Normal mode), a tab at the bottom of the screen (Source)flips you to another window where you see the html results of what you have done in the Normal screen. You can edit the code in the Source screen, then flip back to Normal to see the change. Even if you don't want to actually use it to build a site, KompoZer is a great practice tool, and the people over at the supporting forum, http://wysifauthoring.informe.com/forum/
are great.

I found that "Head First HTML with CSS and XHTML" was excellent book for a beginner.

Another option is video lessons. The course at Educator (http://educator.com/computer-science/html/strine/) is a good one because it is taught from an HTML5 perspective even though it is an all-encompassing tutorial on learning HTML from the ground up. It also talks a lot about tricks of the trade and approaches and practices that make for better websites.

There are also a lot of links to good options at w3fools.com.

Hi Jared,
Looks like you already have lots of people giving you some helpful sites to check out! (That's what I like about this forum)
Anyway, although I'm a WordPress fan and use WISYWIG, occasionally I get some help from this site too.

I have a decent knowledge of HTML and whatever I have learned is thanks to Dreamweaver. I used to type something or add a picture and used to check the codes.. I worked on it for almost 7-8 months. Now I have a decent knowledge and can manage with it easily
