Perhaps you're overlooking other possibilities, such as...
Case 1: A site that is deliberately NOT optimized for search engine traffic because the owner doesn't want to compete with his tens of thousands of affiliates.
Case 2: A site designed purely for PPC traffic.
Case 3: A site designed purely for offline advertising.

I used both, and they weren't seo optimized.

SEO is the cheapest form of advertising in the net. It's true. Sure you have free classifieds and things of that nature but nothing works like SEO. The best part is it's free! Getting free traffic will give you a leg up on any competitors in your niche because they are probably having to use paid methods to drive traffic to their site. However when armed with SEO knowledge you will be able to generate massive amounts of free traffic.

Google is the most popular search engine on the Internet. Google is so powerful, and is becoming more and more difficult to get ranked high on its listings. So, SEO has become very important to get indexed and get good ranking in search engines.

That is true.But the original content needs to be seen.Just having original content doesn't mean search engines will give you the first positions.They need to know which keyword related content and for which query it needs to be delivered.To tell this to search engines you need SEO.
SEO is not just matching the title to the content.
A great content unread by the relevant visitors is almost equal to unpublished one. |

I am not much keen on putting my site under google's mercy.
Free traffic is good.But it is not the end of the world.
Allan and Franc has already mentioned about it.
Each business and site has its own purpose and mode of advertising/traffic which works good. |

Yes SEO is important but it's definitely not the only way to build a successful site. As mentioned above there's subscriber list, offline marketing and so on -- and to add there's even the viral marketing approach.

The volume of business being done online is expanding at a very fast pace. At present there are millions of web sites which currently are there on the word Wide Web.
The ever increasing numbers of web sites on the internet are a proof in it self that the online business is a profitable business.

But in reality it depends on the market you are targeting, on your intentions, on product and so on.
There are many marketing methods to work with, like JV, co-regs etc and SEO is one of them;
There are people spending 100.000 month on PPC yet they never have touched SEO, and there are the complete opposite, and there are people who use affiliate channel to drive traffic using all methods together |

do you know that all successful websites has done SEO methods? creating quality content is yes but do you think that you will get indexed by google just by creating content? and do you think that just by changing content you will be in the first page of search engine.. maybe you should think a lot of times..
