SBi only puts the pages you tell it to on the first page ... over time you don't want 150 links on your home page ... it may never load!
So yes, a sitemap is important ... no page should have more than 75 links total (that's everything ... menu, footer, graphic links, and text links).
Once you get to the point where you are no longer including all pages on your index page (home page), then you need to do a sitemap. Once your sitemap reaches 50 links or so ... you need to consider breaking it out to multiple sitemaps, in a logical category of some kind, then link to all sitemaps from the home page as well.
At that point, you may likely want to move some of those home page links into tier 3 pages, just so your home page will be faster at loading
