Just wanna clear something about wordtracker's free tool because its not specified anywhere on the page. Are the results daily or monthly? If its daily, do i multiply it by 30? How many search results (monthly) should i have to determine if its a good niche to explore? 1,000??? 5,000???

If I am not mistaken, the results shown are daily. In my case, I don't really use the number of daily searches alone to determine if the market is a good market to enter.

For example, you may get 3000+ searches for a keyword like "web hosting" but the competition is high too in this market.

I subscribed to the full version of Wordtracker (and it's worth it) and I use the KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index) as my guide and feel on particular niche.

Hope this helps.

I use Wordtracker and Google's external keyword tool, so I can get an idea from different data sources.

I trust and don't trust either of them Smile But if they're both saying similar things - it makes me a bit more confident.

I also do quoted searches to see what 'exact match' competition is out there. So if there's 1800 matches for "pro k fly fishing reel' (I made it up), then this is pretty good. If it was 18,000 I wouldn't try to get an article in the SERPs because the competition is just too high.

The 1800 I referred to was Google quotes results. So this is checking out my exact-match competition in Google.

I don't want to write an article with a uber ton of competition, so 5000-10,000 is about as high as I'll go.

If it was Wordtracker, and showed 1800 daily searches - I'd be all over the keyword, but I would want to check Google with a quote search to see what the competition is.

To many of us marketers head off an slay articles all night without doing proper research Smile

Thanks for the tip Rob. I'll consider 10,000 as my maximum limit for search results.

Thanks. You want to be fair to yourself. Any more than 10,000 quoted search results really is going to be tough to crack into the top 10.

You could try going more long-tailed keywords to find other variations if you really want something close.
