this is the only part of the forum I've gotten involved with (because I'm not into full-blown affiliate-ism), so thought I'd put this here. I'm sure it can be moved if necessary.

I'm really curious as to why I would get the following email:
Seeking Top Affiliates For Insurance, Financial,
& Home Improvement Sites

Dear Dee,

Our company, ABCLeads, owns many top ranked insurance, financial, and home improvement websites offering visitors unbiased professional information, quotes and an Insiders Guide upon request. Your website,www.minniepauz.com, has been noted as a strong potential advertising/link partner candidate for our websites. I would personally like to invite you to Review Our Affiliate Program. Earn up to $25/lead.....

1. I've never received emails for affiliate stuff before
2. I have joined only this board and the About-Adsense newsletter
3. My site has NO potential to be a strong candidate to the above company

Soooooo....I'm wondering what kind of information they are using to include me in their marketing efforts. Any ideas? I get quite a good amount of traffic, have good placement in search engines, a decent pr, blah blah blah, but how would they know this and why would my menopause site be of interest to them? Just curious. I actually consider this as spam and I get plenty of that without adding more.

Probably just spamming domain names. On my new site, which I have not published anywhere nor have an email addresses for it posted, I receive junk email to "info@mysite.com" which is an address I've never used.

Just SPAM is my guess.

nope, not that since it was addressed to me by name (first and last). That's not so unusual either since my name and email IS plastered all over the internet. There's still something fishy about this. The only thing I can figure is that they feel my market may be interested in their products.

That's why they contacted you ... your stats are readily available on the net, and marketing companies quite frequently check out the movers and shakers. Be complimented, you are a mover and shaker to them Smile

How do they know?

Alexa and Google site stats are readily available. Searches on websites related to women and topics of interest to them. It's also possible they saw your referral url in their Adwords data (you post Adsense which is fed by Adwords).

Why your site?

Women are the primary purchasers of consumer goods and services on the internet, particular those items relating to the family like insurance!

Your visitors are their target market, so it would be natural for them to want to contact you.

The fact that you are even posting Adsense tells them you are interested in earning income on the site, and affiliate income is not out of line. So they had a basis upon which to contact you.

No potential?

Just because women come to your site to relax and be entertained, doesn't mean they wouldn't also like the ability to save money and make their lives easier in other ways also.

Now granted, they won't want "in your face" ads and "buy buy buy" all over the place. But, if you took a couple products that make life easier for you, and you tell them why and how you use these products and just happen to include an affiliate link in the article as well ... what do you think their reaction will be?

It might be worth a test, whether it's insurance, a kitchen gadget, or personal organizer software ... make it something that's available online, that you are comfortable endorsing, and then see the results.

Now the ball is back in your court Smile

I suspect they got your name from your domain registration. I know I've gotten personally addressed emails that way.

Yes, I get various postal correspondence, too, based on information used to register domains.

Cheers,
Charlie.

It wasn't the fact that they got my name that prompted me to post this thread. After 6 years of having a site online I'm fully aware of how they harvest names, addresses, phone numbers, emails, etc....... Debs really answered my questions about why this company would seek me out for their affiliate program, so I'm going to take another look at it and see if it's something I want to do.

I have been doing this for a couple of years, but on a very selective basis, usually with products and services related to menopause, and usually not connected with an affiliate program. My mistake! Smile I didn't feel like I had the time to set up all these different affiliates and most of them didn't pay much anyway, so I kind of sacrificed my own income for the past 6 years. I'm getting a bit smarter this year!

Sorry, I think we missed the point.

That's ok Charlie, my point is usually vague anyway! Smile I appreciate your responses!

I'm looking into the site that sent me the email and I'm totally confused. Is this something that any of you are familiar with? http://www.affiliate-program-marketing-center.com/

Since I'm new to the affiliate scene and will probably be getting more of these types of inquiries, how do you know what is good or what not to waste time on? I really don't want to end up with all kinds of ads on my site, but still want to provide my readership with helpful information. They don't all have to be money makers, but I do want to take advantage of whatever opportunities that fit with my overall business.

Thanks.... Dee

Hello again Dee.

No. But that doesn't make it a good or bad prospect, irrespective of their contact method.

Personally, I don't...

Some people say they can tell by a gut feeling, but I usually do a small test if I haven't heard of them or know someone who has. At the end of the day, it's an inexact science, and the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Just make sure the first mouthful is a small one... just in case.

Hope this helps,
Charlie.

I haven't heard of them either ... they could be great ... but that doesn't mean you have to deal with them ... just depends on the way you want to do things.

If you want to target specific products (like your prior articles you mentioned above) I would go and find merchants that have an affiliate program and offer the products you like, then go from there.
