Post subject: Linux webhosting, windows webhosting ????
|
|
|
| I've made a couple of websites but I am far from being a pro at it. I was looking at some of the web hosting recommendations at this forum. Hostgator came up a few times so I visited their website. They list 2 operating systems for their webhosting. Ive seen others have this as well. Why is there a linux webhost and windows webhost option? I run winxp sp2. Am I able to use a linux webhost? Is linux just the operating system the webhost uses? I hope Ive made my confusion clear. Thanks in advance. |

Short answer.
Think Windows and think Mac. Forget the advantages, just two things - How many are being used and how many applications are available for each.
In both cases, it's Windows by a great margin.
Now, just keep that concept in mind, but substitute Linux for Mac.
Now, flip the results.
Linux is to servers like Windows is to operating systems.
Far more of it and more applications, as well.
Unless you have a particular need for a Windows server, join the rest of the world and go with an "IX" server.

From what most people tell me windows is good but its very expensive to have as a hosting OS (for the company and for the clients). I am not sure if that helps really though. _________________ This is Too Easy! Automated Cash Gifting.

Linux is an operating system and you can own either a windows owned or linux owned website.
Select your webhost wisely.
I would recommend taking a look at hostgainer.com
they seems to be a pretty good and cheap as its an indian host.

You can use a Winxp machine and Linux webhosting service. No issues there.
If you site is based on ASP or any other MS related technologies, then you might need a windows hosting.Otherwise it is good to go with Linux.More secured and More stable.
Bluehost is my favorite. |
